Tigers Hold Off Javs

ADA, OKLAHOMA – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team fought hard, but could not overcome East Central University and the outstanding play of their guard Casi Rawls in a 66-62 loss in Lone Star Conference cross over action on Saturday.
          
Rawls scored the final five points of the game for the Tigers (2-2) after the Javelinas (1-4) had pulled to within 61-59 on a three-pointer by Brandy Garcia (Edinburg/Edinburg North HS) with 1:34 remaining in the game.  Rawls finished the game with a near triple-double with 19 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and five steals.
          
The Javelinas never led in the game and were only tied once at 4-4.  They fell behind by 15 points in the first half, 26-11 before closing out the half on a 14-2 run over the final 9:16.  In the second half, the Tigers inched ahead once more and led by 10 points with 9:06 to play, but there was no quit in the Hoggies who hung close.
          
The Javelinas shot 33.8 percent from the field, made 9-of-28 three-point attempts and were 9-for-17 at the foul line.  Victoria Gonzalez (Hidalgo/Hidalgo HS) posted her second straight double-double with 13 points, 17 rebounds and two blocks.  Chelsea Solis (San Antonio/Wagner HS) added 11 points and five rebounds while Novella Thomas (Corpus Christi/West Oso HS) had 10 points and eight rebounds.  Garcia had eight points off the bench while Kelly Bastow (Bunbury, Aus./Bunbury Catholic) added eight points and five assists.

The Tigers shot 38.8 percent from the field, made 7-of-27 three-point attempts and were 7-for-12 from the foul line.  Laura Harris and Indhira Ramirez each scored 12 points off the bench.
          
Each team had 45 rebounds and the Javelinas committed one turnover more than the Tigers.
          
The Javelinas are back in action on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Northeastern State at home.
