2010-11 PacWest Men’s Basketball Report #1

PHOENIX, AZ - Chaminde senior guard Steven Bennett (Losa Angeles, CA/Dorsey) has been selected the first Pacific West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week of the 2010-11 campaign. The award was announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, AZ, on Sunday, Nov. 21, for games contested on the opening week- end of the season - Nov. 12-14.

Bennett led the Silverswords to a 2-0 start with NCAA II West Region wins over Saint Martin’s and Western Oregon. He shared the PacWest lead in scoring by averag- ing 17.0 points per game and topped the league by doling out 6.5 assists per game.

He also tied for sixth in shooting at 50.0% after making 11 of 22 attempts from the field and tied for 11th in rebounding with a 3.5 per game average. Bennett was nearly perfect from the foul line, shooting 91.7% (11 for 12) to rank fourth for the week, while he ranked second in assist/turnover ratio (2.6).


PacWest Men’s Basketball Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll

Chris Curtis - Chaminade (Jr., 6-3, 185, G, Tustin, CA/Tustin)...helped the Silverswords to a 2-0 week with victories vs. Western Washington and St. Martin’s...averaged 12.0 points per game to tie for fifth in the league for the week...averaged 3.5 rebounds per contest...tied for third in steals per game for the week (1.5)...averaged 1.5 three-pointers made per game.

Mamadou Diarra - Chaminade (Jr., 7-0, 235, C, Bamako, Mali/Stoneridge Prep)...helped the Silverswords to a 2-0 week with victories vs. Western Washington and St. Martin’s...averaged 13.5 points and 13.0 rebounds per game while shooting 66.7% (12 for 18) from the field...tied for first in shooting, ranked first in rebounding and ranked fourth in scoring for the week in the PacWest...led the PacWest in blocked shots per game (5.5) after rejecting 11 in first two contests.

Andrew Gipson - Hawai‘i Hilo (Sr., 6-0, 180, G, Oak- land, CA/Salesian)...ranked second in assists per game (5.0) and tied for 10th in points per game (9.0) in the PacWest for the week...shot 50.0% (6 for 12) from the field and contributed 3.0 rebounds per game.

Griffon Jones - Dixie State (Jr., 6-8, 220, F, Cheney, WA/Cheney)...averaged 15.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in 1-2 week for the Red Storm...ranked ninth in rebounding and third in scoring in the PacWest for the week...ranked third in shooting (61.5%) after mak- ing 16 of 26 field goal attempts...ranked fifth in steals per game (1.3) and eighth in free throw shooting (76.5%) after making 13 of 17 from the line.

Chandler Pearson - Chaminade (Sr., 6-3, 195, G, Huntington, UT/Emery)...helped the Silverswords to a 2-0 week with victories vs. Western Washington and St. Martin’s...ranked seventh in points per game (11.5) and tied for sixth in shooting (50.0% / 7 for 14) for the week in the conference...hit four three-pointers (4 for 10 / 40.0%) to tie for first in three’s made per game (2.0) and tie for fourth in three-point shooting.

Lavell Shipman - Hawai‘i Hilo (Sr., 6-3, 170, G/F, Wilson, NC/Hunt)...helped guide the Vulcans to a 1-1 start to the season by averaging 10.0 points, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game...ranked third in the league in assist average and tied for first in steals per game for the week...ranked ninth in scoring for the week...tied for sixth in foul shooting (83.3%) after making 10 of 12 attempts.

Justin Smith - Hawai‘i Hilo (Sr., 6-6, 210, F, Los Angeles, CA/Reseda)...helped the Vulcans to a 1-1 start by averaging 17.0 points per game...tied for the PacWest lead for the week...ranked fifth in shooting at 53.3% after making 16 of 30 field goal attempts...ranked fourth in rebounding for the week in the league (7.0)...ranked seventh in assist average (2.5) for the week.

Tom Whitehead - Dixie State (Sr., 6-6, 185, F, St. George, UT/Dixie)...averaged 8.7 points and 5.3 re- bounds per game in a 1-2 week for the Red Storm...ranked 12th in scoring and seventh in rebound- ing for the week in the conference...averaged 2.3 as- sists and shot 83.3% (10 for 12) from the line...tied for sixth in foul shooting for the week.

Zach Wilde - Hawai‘i Hilo (Jr., 6-7, 220, F, Snohomish, WA/Snohomish)...helped the Vulcans to a 1-1 start by averaging 12.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game...tied for fifth in scoring and tied for second in rebounding in the PacWest for the week...tied for the league lead in steals per game (2.0) for the week...shot 85.7% from the free throw line (6 for 7) to rank fifth in foul shooting for the week in the conference.

Nick Witherill - Grand Canyon (Jr., 6-2, N/A, G, Phoenix, AZ/Highland)...scored 11 points in lone game of the week - a loss at Division I Utah in the season opener...shot 55.6% from the floor (5 for 9).
