Portales, N.M..— Senior Kara Bible (P, Albuquerque, N.M./ Cibola HS) scored a team high 11 points, and reached her first double digit total of the season, but the Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team (2-8) dropped a 75-54 decision to University of Central Oklahoma (6-3), in Lone Star Conference crossover action, Monday evening at Greyhound Arena. Krista Ford (So., G, Lubbock, Texas/ Frenship HS) also contributed 10 points and had perfect night at the free throw line.
The Bronchos played tough defense through the first half, holding the Zias to under 30 percent from the floor, yet the Zias took advantage of the Bronchos foul trouble and scored seven of their first 11 points at the free throw line. Central Oklahoma held a 32-15 edge with 3:16 left in the first half, but Eastern closed the period on a 12-7 run, capped by Hannah Altheide (So., G, El Paso, Texas/Chapin HS) draining a three point shot to go into the half 39-27.
The second half started off well for the Zias with Bible draining a jumper but Central Oklahoma responded with a three point shot, just minutes into play. The Zias and Bronchos battled back and forth exchanging baskets until 6:45 in when the Bronchos exploded on a 14-0 run over 6:32 minutes giving them a hearty 64-40 lead. A pair of free throws by Bible broke up the possession but it was too little, too late for the Zias. The Zias outscored the Bronchos 13-11 in the final 7 minutes of play but UCO was able to hold and defeat the Zias 75-54.
The Zias shot just under 30 percent from the floor, while UCO hit 45.6 percent of their attempts. Bible and Ford combined for a team best 21 points and Til-Lois Fifer (Sr., F, Tulia, Texas/ Tulia HS) snatched up a game high 12 rebounds. Ashley Beckley led the Bronchos with 19 points, connecting on seven of 15 attempts.
