Williams Single-Handedly Sweeps Northeast-10 Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors

Freshman Guard Named Both NE-10 Player and Rookie of the Week

LOWELL (Dec. 13, 2010) – Freshman guard Akeem Williams (Brockton, Mass.) earned both Northeast-10 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors, as announced by the conference office on Monday.

The rookie tallied a personal-best 32 points in Saturday’s clash against Merrimack at the Tsongas Center and averaged 30.5 PPG on the week.  He led the River Hawks to a pair of wins, including a 65-59 victory at Franklin Pierce on Tuesday and a 71-70 win over the Warriors on Saturday.

He has led the team in scoring the last four games and is averaging a team-best 18.6 PPG on the year.  On the glass, he averaged 4.0 boards per game during the two-game stretch and averages just shy of that (3.9) this season.

Williams shot .486 from the floor (18-37), including .583 (7-12) from long range during the week, as well.  He averaged 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game on the week.

Williams is one of three children of Shirly and Orson Williams of Brockton, Mass.  He is an undeclared liberal arts major.

Next up, the River Hawks will host two non-conference opponents to close out 2010, before digging back into their NE-10 schedule at the start of the new year.  First, they will take on Concordia (N.Y.) on Saturday, Dec. 18 at 3:00 p.m. before hosting Bridgeport at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30.
