Foster’s 18 points leads Buffaloes to come-from-behind win
CANYON, Texas –West Texas A&M started slow but finished with a flurry as they overcame a 15-point deficit to open Lone Star Conference action with a 75-67, overtime win over Cameron, Thursday night at the First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas.
The win lifts WTAMU to 5-0 on the year, marking the first time the Buffaloes have opened a season-5-0 since doing so at the start of the 2005-06 campaign, while Cameron drops to 5-1.
Lionel Foster scored a team-high 18 points, hitting 12 of 16 free throws, as well as dishing nine assists and making three steals to lead the Buffs. Foster hit 10 of his free throws in the second half and during the overtime period to aid the Buffs’ comeback.
Both teams plodded through the first 15 minutes of the game, as, at one point, the two teams went 7:30 without scoring a point. A three-pointer by Rod Little (Jr-TR, Moss Point, Miss.), closed the Aggies’ lead to 14-11 with 5:21 to play in the first half.
A pair of Milt Darner three-pointers pushed the Aggies to their biggest lead of the half, 22-15, with 4:21 remaining in the half. Darner’s third ‘three’ of the half game boosted the Cameron lead to 11 points, 27-16, at the 2:48 mark. He would lead all scorers with 15 points at the break.
Jacquiese Holcombe (Sr-1L, College Park, Ga.) hit a layup at the buzzer, making the score 31-20 at the half.
Holcombe opened the second half with a driving score while drawing a foul. His three-point play closed the Aggie lead to 31-23.
On the Buffs’ next possession, Joe Mincey (Sr-1L, Brunswick, Ga.) drained a three, pulling the Buffs to within five points at the 17:57 mark.
The Aggies got their first points of the half on Nathan Murray’s tip-in at the 16:22 mark. Murray followed with another tip in, boosting the Aggie lead back to nine points, 35-26.
A driving layup by Little resulted in a bucket and Little’s drawing a foul. The Moss Point, Miss., junior went to the line and made his free throw, closing the making to 35-29. Little kept up the pressure, intercepting Cameron’s inbounds pass and hitting the layup, making it a four-point game, 35-31, with 14:45 to play.
Cameron’s Darner and WT’s Little then exchanged three-pointers to make the score 38-34 in favor of the visiting Aggies.
An Alex Davis (Sr-1L, Milwaukee, Wis.) three pointer from the top of the key pulled the Buffs to within three points, 40-37 with 12:30 remaining. Davis followed with a right-handed hook shot off a Lionel Foster (Jr-TR, Houston, Texas) feed to pull WT to within one point, 40-39 at the 11:50 mark.
A pair of LaDarius Hall (Sr-1L, Thomasville, Ga.) free throws gave the Buffaloes a 41-40 lead, their first since a 4-2 score at the 18:26 mark of the first half.
The Aggies retook the lead, 50-48, on a shot clock-beating dunk by Terry Dawson. Nathan Murray then hit a jumper to push the Aggies’ advantage to 52-48 with 6:40 left in the second half.
Foster made a driving layup with 5:17 to play to give the Buffs the lead again, 53-52. A jumper by Milton Garner put the Aggies back on top, 54-53. Garner then hit a turn-around from the left corner to make the lead 56-53 with 4:18 remaining.
WT’s Foster cut the deficit to one point with a pair of free throws at the 3:49 mark. The Buffs tied it, 57-57, as Courtney Carr (Jr-TR, Selma, Ala.) grabbed a short shot by Foster and laid the ball off the glass just before the shot clock buzzer sounded. Foster then hit the second end of a two-shot free throw opportunity to put WT back ahead, 58-57, with 2:30 left in the second half.
After Cameron retook the lead, 59-58, on a pair of Josh Davis free throws, Foster hit a short jumper, giving WT a 60-59 lead with a minute and a half to play.
Nathan Murray put the Aggies back on top, 61-60 with 1:19 remaining. Vinicius Telo followed with a pair of free throws to give Cameron a three point advantage with 42 seconds to play in regulation.
WT’s Little followed with a three pointer from the right wing, tying the game, 63-63, with 25 seconds to play.
The Aggies held for the last shot, calling time out with 3.7 seconds showing on the clock. Milton Garner’s fall-away from 25 feet was short, sending the game to overtime.
Foster gave the Buffs the first overtime lead, 65-63, with a pair of free throws. The Buffaloes then forced the Aggies into a shot clock violation and responded with LaDarius Hall giving the Buffs a 68-63 advantage by nailing a three-pointer from the left wing. WT upped the lead to 70-63 on another pair of Foster free throws.
The Buff lead grew to eight on a Hall tip-in with 1:28 to play and took their largest lead at 10 points, 75-65 on a Carr free throw with 12 seconds left on the game clock.
In addition to Foster’s 18 points, Rod Little scored 14, LaDarius Hall had 12 and Jacquiese Holcome tallied 10. Car had a game and season-high 13 rebounds. As a team, the Buffs shot 42 percent from the floor and 74 percent from the foul line.
Cameron was paced by Milton Garner’s 23 points. Nathan Murray recorded a double-double, with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Vinicius Telo added 11 points. The Aggies shot 38.8 percent from the field and were 62.9 percent from the line.
Each team had 38 rebounds.
The Buffaloes next outing will be Saturday, Dec. 4, when they host Southwestern Oklahoma State. Tipoff at the First United Bank Center is set for 6 p.m. CST.
