UCO Wrestling Topples Thunderwolves With Late Surge

EDMOND (Dec. 2) – Heavyweight Cody Dauphin pulled off a 2-1 upset in the final bout to cap a three-match winning streak that lifted No. 11-ranked Central Oklahoma to a 23-13 victory over Colorado State-Pubelo Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos broke a 13-all tie behind the closing surge, with Tanner Keck hanging on for a 3-2 triumph at 184 pounds to give UCO the lead before Jarrett Edison clinched the dual with a 10-0 major decision at 197.  Dauphin then arranged the final margin in his home debut when the freshman upset No. 7-ranked Patrick Carey.

“We’re happy and excited to win the match,” UCO coach David James said.  “It was a hard fought match and it’s a good thing we had bonus wins in there because that made the difference.  I was proud of our guys that we found a way to win the match.”

UCO won six of the 10 matches in evening its dual record at 1-1, with the key victory coming at 157 where Austin Standage scored a stunning second-period fall while trailing in his match with Matt Addington.

Making his first appearance of the season, Standage faced an 8-4 deficit in the second period when he shot in on a takedown attempt and managed to get Addington to his back and score the fall at the 4:37 mark without a takedown being awarded.

That gave the Bronchos a 13-6 lead, but CSU-Pueblo came back to win the next two matches to tie it and set the stage for UCO’s late surge.

Keck put the Bronchos in front to stay with his 3-2 triumph over Adam Carey, getting the deciding points on a takedown on the edge of the mat midway through the first period.  Carey escaped seconds later and got free again in the second to tie it, with Keck snapping the 2-2 deadlock on an escape early in the third and then holding on down the stretch.

Edison wrapped it up with his 10-0 rout at 197, racking up three takedowns and a near-fall in his 10-0 shutout that gave UCO a 20-13 lead.  Dauphin capped it with his upset, collecting the needed riding time point by a mere two seconds to break a 1-1 tie.

The Bronchos also got wins from 133 Trison Graham and 141 Ky Corley, with Graham scoring four takedowns en route to an 11-3 major decision and Corey using an early five-point move to pave the way to an 8-5 victory.

UCO returns to action Saturday, traveling to Hays, Kan. for the Fort Hays State Open, and then is back home again next Thursday to host Oklahoma City for a 7 p.m. dual.
