AUGUSTA, Ga. – A second place finish by the men’s cross country squad combined with a pair of third place finishes by the women’s soccer and women’s cross country teams provided the impetus for UNCP to claim third in the Peach Belt Conference standings for the 2010-11 Commissioner’s Cup following the completion of all fall championship sports, the league announced Wednesday.
Columbus State currently leads the standings after the Cougars won the men’s and women’s cross country championships and finished in a tie for first in women’s soccer, taking titles in all three fall sports the school sponsors.
Clayton State’s men’s soccer team tied for the PBC regular-season title with Lander, and sits just ahead of the Braves in second.
This is UNCP’s highest finish following the completion of the fall sports schedule since joining the PBC prior to the 1992-93 campaign.
The PBC Commissioner’s Cup is an all-sports award and will be presented following the academic year in June of 2011.
Commissioner’s Cup standings are based on a rating that is calculated using final regular-season standings (only cross country and golf use championship results). Based on the number of schools sponsoring a particular sport, teams are given points based on their finish which is then calculated against the total number of points the school had available given the sports it sponsors. The formula allows for a balanced rating that does not punish schools who may not offer every PBC championship sport.
