EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior Mike Tobin has been named East Stroudsburg University’s Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week after earning a spot on the All-Tournament team at the Pocono Classic last weekend at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Tobin (Hopatcong, N.J./Hopatcong) led the Warriors to a pair of wins while averaging 14.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 5.5 steals. He was 10-for-22 from the field, made his only three-point attempt and was perfect (8-for-8) at the foul line.
He had his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds and had five steals in an 81-68 win over Edinboro in ESU’s first game on Friday night. He followed up with 17 points (15 in the first half), six rebounds and six steals as the Warriors beat Felician 81-70 on Saturday night, and was named to the All-Tournament team for the second straight year.
Tobin was ESU’s second-leading scorer (10.2 ppg) and top rebounder (7.2 rpg) on last year’s PSAC East regular season championship and NCAA Division II Tournament team that went 24-6. The Warriors were 14-1 when he scored at least 10 points, and are 2-0 this season when he hits double figures.
The senior forward is averaging 9.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game so far this season, ranking third on the team in scoring and second in rebounding. On the defensive end, he leads the PSAC with 3.8 steals per game to key a group that forces 22 turnovers and 12.8 steals per game.
ESU will take a 5-1 record into its next action at the Porreco Cup at Gannon on December 29-30. The Warriors will play Wayne State (5-1) on the first night, and Gannon (2-2) or Seton Hill (1-4) in the championship or consolation game. The home schedule resumes on January 3-4 with PSAC crossover games against Slippery Rock and Mercyhurst.
