Poor shooting cost Griffons against undefeated Lions

JOPLIN, Mo. – Poor shooting cost the Western men’s basketball team in Joplin, Mo. against the undefeated Missouri Southern Lions. Western shot 37.7-percent (23-61) from the field and made just 12-of-34 long range shots falling 85-71 against the Lions. Western falls to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in MIAA play.

After a 5-0 start by the Lions P’Allen Stinnett drained two three’s giving Western it’s only lead of the game at 6-5 with 18:29 to play in the first half. The Lions took its biggest lead of the half at 36-26 after a Marquis Addison jumper with 2:47 to play in the frame. Western responded going on a 12-6 run, cutting the Lions lead to four at 42-38 at the half. Western’s final 12 points of the half came on four long range bombs.

The Loins had 10 points in the paint and eight points off turnovers but Western dominated the bench points scoring 29 to the Lions six. Western had eight offensive rebounds in the half while Jonathan Phelps led the charge with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting.

The Lions were led by Jason Adams scoring 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting with four coming from beyond the arc. Skyler Bowlin had 11 points with six coming from the charity stripe.

Western cut the Lion lead to two twice in the first three minutes of the second half. The Lions took control extending its lead to 13 with 8:48 to play after a TJ Williams layup. The Griffons never got closer then nine the rest of the way as the Lions improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in MIAA play.

Phelps led the way with 21 points while James Harvey and Stinnett dumped in 13 and 12 respectively. The Griffons had 13 assists on its 23 field goals and made 13-of-15 free throw attempts.

The Lions had five players in double figures with Adams scoring 21. Bowlin dumped in 15 while Keane Thomann, Kevin Hinsey and Marquis Addison scored 13, 11 and 10 respectively. Bowling snared nine rebounds and had seven assists for the Lions.

The Griffons will return to home on Saturday, December 11 to take on the 6th ranked Fort Hays State University Tigers in the MWSU Fieldhouse. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
