Merrimack Triumphs Over Dominican, 80-73

NYACK, N.Y.- The Merrimack men’s basketball team captured its fourth-straight victory Saturday afternoon with an 80-73 win over Dominican at the Nyack College Tournament. The Warriors improved to 6-1 on the year with the win while the Chargers remain winless at 0-7. Merrimack finished the non-conference slate with a 4-0 mark.

For the third game in a row, Roland Davis (Deer Park, N.Y.) paced the Warriors in scoring with 26 and added four helpers. Dee Mency (Hagerstown, Md.) was right behind Davis with 25 while Wayne Mack (Paterson, N.J.) pitched in 12 points and three assists.

Dominican jolted out to an 18-5 lead after seven minutes of action. Merrimack used an 11-0 run to draw the deficit to just one. The Warriors claimed the lead after six-consecutive points from Davis with less than six minutes left to play in the opening period. Merrimack clung to a two-point advantage at the break, 37-35.

In the second stanza, the Warriors never relinquished their lead en route to the 80-73 victory. Merrimack’s largest lead of the day was a pair of 17-point spreads.

Dominican cut the Warriors’ edge to three with 48 ticks remaining on the clock. A pair of free throws by Mack and a jumper by Mency allowed Merrimack to glide to the finish.

The Warriors shot 43% from the floor and 40% from downtown. The Chargers were held to 37.5% shooting from the field and 30% from three-point range. Dominican owned the rebounding advantage, pulling down 47 boards while Merrimack grabbed 42.

“Today’s win was a good way to end the weekend and our non-conference schedule,” said head coach Bert Hammel. “We started out slow but did a good job recovering and not letting up for the remainder of the game.”

Aaron Strothers (Wareham, Mass.) rejected three shots in the game for Merrimack to go along with his eight points. Tyler Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) controlled a game-high nine rebounds while scoring 7 points in the win. Freshman Kevin Regan (Philadelphia, Pa.) logged a career-best 25 minutes in the contest.

Leon Porter was Dominican’s leading scorer on the day with 26 while two other players had double-figures in points.

Merrimack returns to Volpe Gym December 7 to square off against Southern N.H. in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup.
