BOCA RATON - Lynn University’s men’s basketball team fell in its Sunshine State Conference opener to Eckerd, 88-68, Saturday night at LU’s de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center. The Fighting Knights fall to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in the SSC while the Tritons improve to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.
The Tritons had the hot-shooting hand all night, shooting 59.6% from the field, including 11-15 from three-point range. On the other hand, Lynn shot just 37.3% for the night.
Lynn was led by Jimmy Gaskins who recorded his third-straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Rodney Kennedy also scored 12 points, all on three point field goals. Chris Hall and Josh Garcia also had ten points apiece while Jovan Robinson had nine points and a game-high six assists.
The Fighting Knights were up early, but a 17-4 Tritons run gave Eckerd a 32-22 lead with 7:19 to go in the first half. Eckerd went into the break with a 50-39 lead.
A three by Kennedy and a pair of free throws by Gaskins got Lynn within eight, at 52-44, early in the second, but that was as close as the Fighting Knights could get.
LU (2-6, 0-1 SSC) hosts its annual Courtyard by Marriott Holiday Classic next weekend. Lynn plays host to West Florida and Indianapolis, in that order, on December 18-19. Both contests are scheduled for 7 pm. SSC rival Barry will also play the two out-of-town teams in opposite order at 5 pm both days.
