Lady Knights unable to recover from slow start at Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C.—Junior guard Megan Lee (Chillicothe, Ohio) scored a season-high 20 points for St. Andrews Presbyterian College but host Limestone College used a strong first half to win Wednesday’s Conference Carolinas women’s basketball opener, 63-47, in the Timken Center.

The Lady Saints (4-1 Overall, 1-0 Conf.) outscored the Lady Knights (0-4, 0-1) by 18 in the first 20 minutes and then held on in an evenly played second half.

Megan Lee added team-high totals of four steals and three assists to her 20 points. Junior Rebecca Bryant (Cincinnati, Ohio) followed with nine points including the Knights only two made 3-pointers.

After Limestone won the opening tip and scored on the ensuing possession, Bryant drilled her first three-pointer to give SAPC its only lead at 3-2. The Saints defense held the Knights to just two made field goals over the next 13 minutes as the hosts built up a double-digit advantage with a 20-8 run.

Limestone increased its lead to 41-23 at the intermission by shooting 53.6-percent in the first period and dominating the glass by 12 (20-8). St. Andrews shot 40.9% in the first half.

The Royal Blue and White played much better in the second half barely outscoring the Saints, 24-22, but Limestone was able to keep a comfortable double figure cushion throughout before closing out the 16-point victory.

Junior Kaileigh West (Jacksonville, Ill.) netted a game-high 22 points and sophomore Maria Young (Asheville, N.C.) added 16 points as the duo accounted for half of the Saints offense.

Limestone finished with a 40-30 rebounding edge as West completed a double-double with 14 boards. The Saints shot 42.9% while St. Andrews made 34.0%.

The Lady Knights did a better job protecting the ball with a season low 16 turnovers. Sophomore Benee Norton (Atlanta, Ga.) chipped in with six points. Freshman Monique Lee (Chillicothe, Ohio) had a team-high six rebounds. Monique Lee and classmate Natalie Whitman (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) both had five points.
