Minnesota State Sweeps the Maverick Classic

Wilkinson Earns Her Second Straight Double-Double

Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women’s basketball team earned a 59-56 victory over California (PA) in the final game of the Maverick Classic.

The Mavericks were slow to start, as they scored only three points in the first four minutes, with Britney Thiesfeld marking all three. Thiesfeld finished the first half with 13 points, shooting 5-6 from the field.

MSU would earn its first lead of the game 16 minutes into the first half as Ali Wilkinson drilled a three. Wilkinson would earn her second-straight double-double with16 points and 11 rebounds, good for her fourth career double-double.

The Mavericks controlled much of the second half and had their biggest lead with just under six minutes in the game. The lead would dwindle as the Vulcans would go on a 11-2 run, shrinking the gap to a 56-54 MSU lead.

California went 1-4 at the line in the final two minutes,shooting 12- 20 from the line on the day.

Thiesfeld would score a career-high of 15 points in the win, with 13 in the first half.

Sophomore Stephanie Haight would also tally a career-high, showing 12 points and five rebounds, with eight points in the second half.

The Mavericks outrebounded the Vulcans 41-33 on the day and shot 42.1 percent (24-57) from the floor. MSU scored 15 second-chance points and 33 points off the bench.

MInnesota State earned two victories this weekend generating a 2-0 start to the season. The Mavericks look ahead as they will host Dakota State in a nonconference game Tuesday. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at the Taylor Center.
