Javelina Men’s Basketball Notes

This Week’s Action

The Javelinas played three games this week against Lone Star Conference North Division opponents.  On Thursday, they play host to Northeastern State and on Saturday, Central Oklahoma comes to town.  The team travels to Southeastern Oklahoma on Tuesday night.

Last Week

The Javelinas dropped a pair of game on the road last week.  First, they traveled to East Central on Saturday and fell 53-49.  Then, they went to Austin and lost to St. Edward’s, 70-67 on Monday.

Playing It Close to the Vest

The Javelinas have been embroiled in a number of close games this year and unfortunately they have not all gone the way of the Hoggies.  Four of the past five games have been decided by four points or less and the other game was decided by nine points.  Last year, the team played a total of six games decided by four points or less.

Off the Bench

Senior guard Adam Morris has been providing the team with a spark off the bench this year.  Despite starting only one game, he is the team’s leading scorer with 10.7 points per game while shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 80.0 percent from the foul line.

Last week, Morris led the Javelinas with nine points against East Central and then had an outstanding game at St. Edward’s.  He scored a career high 17 points in 29 minutes off the bench while knocking down 5-of-8 shots from the field and 6-of-8 from the foul line.  He added two steals and two rebounds.

Built Ford Tough

Junior Marcus Ford was named the Lone Star Conference South Division Defensive Player of the Week on November 23.

Ford generally has to guard the opponent’s top scoring threat. He held his opponents to 30.8 percent shooting from the floor and plays an important role in the team defense with his shot blocking abilities. He had 10 blocks on the week, including a career high five in a win against Texas Lutheran. He had 12 defensive rebounds and three blocks in a 56-53 loss to St. Edward’s. He led the Hoggie defensive effort that allowed just 56.0 points per game and a 36.7 field goal percentage.

On offense, Ford posted his first career double-double 12 points and 10 rebounds against Texas Lutheran.  He also scored a career high 18 points against Huston-Tillotson.  He averaged 13.0 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game for the week.

A Glimmer

Junior college transfer Mark Stevenson joined the Javelinas with some acclaim after leading Chabot College in scoring last year, but had been struggling for most of this year.  On Monday it appeared that he may be getting back to being the scoring guard the team was hoping for.

Stevenson led the team with 19 points against St. Edward’s.  He went 8-for-15 from the field and made 3-of-8 from three-point range.  He has been very solid on the defensive end this year and leads the team with 13 steals.

In his two year junior college career, Stevenson made 131 three-pointers and shot nearly 42 percent from behind the arc as a freshman when he made 72 trifectas.

Big Wayne

Wayne Lovings is adjusting to college basketball quite well after a five year lay-off.  He leads the team with 8.2 rebounds per game and is putting in a respectable 7.8 points per game.

Lovings posted a career high 13 rebounds at St. Edward’s after being held to a season low two rebounds in the first matchup of the season with the Hilltoppers.  He has already had three games with at least 10 rebounds and is averaging 9.8 rebounds per game in his last four games.

Milestone Victory

Pete Peterson became the first coach in school history to record at least 200 victories in any sport when the Javelinas defeated Texas Lutheran on November 20, 55-46.  He has averaged 15.3 wins per season in 13 prior seasons and had a string of six consecutive winning seasons snapped last year.

Opponent Info

The Javelinas are 5-9 all-time against Northeastern State.  Last year, the Redhawks won 77-53 in Oklahoma.  NSU is 3-2 this year and is led by Domonique Gaines who is averaging 18.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

The Hoggies are 15-22 against Central Oklahoma, but have lost the last three meetings.  The Bronchos are 7-0 and ranked 10th in the nation.  Dauntae Williams leads the team with 16.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.

The Javelinas are 5-7 against Southwestern Oklahoma.  The Bulldogs won in overtime last year, 62-58 and have won three straight meetings.  They are 5-2 this year and are led by Leon Nelson’s 13.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Getting Pierced

Junior transfer Pierce Brooks had his best game in a Javelina uniform on Monday at St. Edward’s.  He scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds while hitting 4-of-8 from the field and 5-of-7 from the foul line.

In his previous five games, Brooks had scored 11 points and attempted only three free throws.  For the week, he shot 58.3 percent from the field and averaged 10.0 points per game.
