BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State Billings men’s and women’s track and field teams picked up where they left off from the 2009-10 season, setting seven new school records and qualifying provisionally 11 times for the conference meet at the Black Hills State Winter Classic Thursday.
“We ran incredibly well tonight for the first meet of the season,” said head coach Dave Coppock. “We set plenty of new school records, but more importantly we were able to get a few provisional qualifying marks and the one automatic mark in the men’s 60 meter hurdles with Reece (Easterling). From here we have to keep the momentum going and keep working hard as the season goes along.”
The field events got the meet started and the Yellowjackets set the pace early on. Leah Berry set a pair of new school records in the triple jump and high jump. Berry cleared the bar at 1.54 meters in the high jump to take third place, and then earned another third place finish with a jump of 10.40 meters in the triple jump event.
Pole vaulter Stacey Pitt set a new school record as she sailed over the bar with a clearance of 3.18 meters and a second place finish in the event. Lexi Halvorson qualified provisionally for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference indoor meet and set a new school record in the weight throw with a toss of 12.60 meters and a fifth place finish.
Halvorson again reached a provisional mark, this time in the shot put, placing sixth with a throw of 11.08. Her toss was third best amongst Jacket throwers who reached provisional marks, finishing behind Morgan Kujala in fifth with a toss of 11.36 meters and Anica Knispel in fourth with a throw of 11.47 meters.
On the men’s side of the field events, Tanner Rottrup reached a provisional qualifying mark with his toss of 13.69 meters and a second place finish in the shot put. Shae Stein tied the school record and reached a provisional mark with a jump of 6.31 meters in the long jump. Stein finished third in the event.
In the running events, the Yellowjackets ran away with the 60 meter sprint finals, sweeping the top three spots. Erika Halle and Justine Simons both ran qualifying times of 8.15 and 8.32 seconds, while Halle’s time was also a new school record. Kandi Bond ran third with a time of 8.35 seconds.
The final provisional mark to be reached came in the women’s 5,000 meter race as Whitney Mickelsen clocked a new school record of 19:18.08 to win the race. The only automatic qualifying time to be reached was in the 60 meter hurdles by Reece Easterling with a time of 8.78 seconds and a first place finish in the finals.
The Yellowjackets return to the track after the New Year, as select athletes will run at the Montana State University Multi-Events Jan. 10 and 11, in Bozeman, Mont. The event is for athletes competing in a pentathlon and heptathlon.
