Golden Bears Second Half Shooting Sinks Chestnut Hill Men’s Basketball

Kutztown, PA – (12/1/2010) – Kutztown University defended their home court with a second-half rally to defeat Chestnut Hill College 76-61 this evening. The Griffins owned a 31-25 halftime advantage behind sophomore guard Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, NJ), but a superior second-half team shooting percentage (70.0%-44.4%) carried the Golden Bears to victory.

Chestnut Hill College (1-4) and Kutztown University (4-1) traded buckets following the opening tip, but a 12-point half from DiRugeris carried the Griffins to a six-point halftime lead. DiRugeris completed a three-point play with 5:56 remaining in the opening period, putting the Griffins up 22-21 and triggering a 9-4 run to intermission, 31-25. Unfortunately the Griffin lead was quickly erased following the break, as the Golden Bears tied the contest, 31-31, with 18:29 still to play. Two minutes later (16:13), a three-point basket from senior guard Julius Gray (Lincoln University, PA) gave the Golden Bears lead for good as Kutztown University built a 12-point lead, 61-49, by the eight-minute mark (8:33). The Griffins cut the lead to eight several times down the stretch, but all was for not as the Golden Bears closed on a high note with a 76-61 win.

The Golden Bears erupted for a 70.0% (17-for-24) shooting percentage in the second half. Leading the way, Gray and freshman Eric Henry (Harrisburg, PA) each finished with 15 points. Gray also supplied five assists while Henry headlined the Golden Bears defense with five steals. Senior forward Tamir Johnson (Philadelphia, PA) contributed a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds; he also made two steals. Totaling 14 points, junior forward Eric Brennan (Chester, PA) was the fourth Golden Bear in double-figures.

DiRugeris matched his season-high with 17 points in the contest. His backcourt partner, senior guard Brandon Williams (Philadelphia, PA), helped generate the Griffin offense with 11 points and eight assists. They also teamed to lead the defensive effort; DiRugeris made a block and two steals while Williams pressured five steals. Junior guard Uros Kovacevic (Kotor, Montenegro) added 10 points and freshman forward Khadim Ndiaye (Long Beach, NY) grabbed, a team-high, five rebounds.

The men’s basketball team returns home to host Cheyney University in a 3:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, December 4.
