CHADRON – Four Chadron State College men’s basketball players scored in double figures and the Eagles hit 14 of 26 3-point attempts en route to their 78-61 win over Mesa State Friday evening in Chadron.

Mesa State entered the game with a 4-0 record and a 24-7 all-time advantage against Chadron State in their series, but the Eagles, who hadn’t won a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opening game since the 2007 season, paid little attention to history in their convincing win.

Chadron State’s (2-2, 1-0 RMAC) Kevin McClelland led all scorers with 18 points and Jordan Lisco nailed five of six 3-pointers to finish with 15 off the bench. Trey Mosby chipped in 13 and Jan Burris scored 10 more while hauling in a game-high eight rebounds.

Mesa State (4-1, 0-1 RMAC) owned a narrow 24-20 lead after the opening 15 minutes, but the Eagles closed the half on a 17-4 scoring run. Burris and Sammy Hines, who finished with six points and four assists, each hit two treys to fuel the scoring burst.

The Eagles led the entire second half and opened the frame with great balance as eight different players scored the opening eight field goals to help put the game away.

More than half of CSC’s field goals came from behind the arc as they hit 14 of 26 and 27 of 61 from the field.

Mesa State, which entered Friday’s game shooting 43 percent from the field, connected on 22 of 61 (36 percent). The Mavericks hit four of 14 from long range and 13 of 19 from the foul line.

Russell Gregory and Kalonji Paschal each scored 13 to pace Mesa State.

The Eagles will host Western State tonight (Saturday) in another RMAC game. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
