The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team dropped its fourth game of the year as it fell 65-48 at Shaw University this afternoon in Spaulding Gym. The Lady Bears improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Abbey drops to 0-4.

Belmont Abbey never led as Shaw led by as many as 18 points. The Bears shot 36.4 percent (24-66) as Brittany Ransom and Kyria Buford both led the way with 11 points. Buford posted a double double with 12 rebounds. Shemieka Brown added ten points and three steals.

Freshman Melisa Foures led the Abbey and all scorers with 16 points in 36 minutes. She sank six of her 13 field goal attempts, including three from three-point range in seven attempts. Senior forward Shayla Jackson added a double double with 11 points, ten rebounds and three steals, and Paula Regalado posted ten points and three assists. Belmont Abbey shot 30 percent (18-60) from the floor.

Neither team shot well in the first half, as the Shaw built a 22-14 lead at the half as the two teams combined to make just 14 shots in 55 attempts. The Abbey converted six of 33 attempts in the opening 20 minutes (18.2 percent) while Shaw did not fare much better, shooting 25 percent (8-32).

The cold shooting stopped in the second half, as the Bears shot 47 percent (16-34) while the Abbey hit 12 shots on 27 attempts (44.4 percent).

Down 33-20 with 14 minutes left, the Crusaders embarked on a 9-2 run to climb to within six points. Two free throws and a jumper by Regalado, a layup from Jackson and a three-pointer by Foures after a Bears basket sliced the deficit to 35-29 with 12:09 to play, but the Abbey could not get to within seven points of Shaw again.

The Bears scored eight of the next ten points to push their lead to ten and would eventually climb to as high as 18 as they would go on to win by 17.
