SAINT GEORGE, Utah-December 4, 2010-Johnna Brown scored a game-high 27 points and led the Dixie State women’s basketball team to a 76-66 win over #5 Seattle Pacific University in the final game of the GNAC/PacWest Challenge at the Burns Arena.
The Red Storm (7-0 overall, 0-0 PacWest) facing its toughest test to date, used a fast start and too a 16-4 lead on a three pointer by Sheila Adams with 15:38 left.
Seattle Pacific (2-2 overall, 0-0 GNAC) would rebound and use a 23-7 run to take the lead at 27-23 with 6:26 remaining in the half. The Falcons hit five of their game seven three pointers during the run to catapult them out in front.
Dixie State would respond by putting together an 11-3 run and taking the lead again 34-30 and would never trail again. DSC led 41-36 at the half.
Breann Hill would open the half with a three pointer, Brown, Chanel Maxey, and Erica Carlson would follow by making layups in an 11-5 run. The Red Storm connected on its first four shots to build a 52-41 lead with 15:57 left.
The Falcons would find their hot hand again, surging to score 14 of the next 18 points and Katie Benson would make consecutive layups to cut the Red Storm margin to 54-52 with 11:58 left.
The two teams would battle back and forth over the next eleven minutes. With DSC leading 67-64 and SPU making a run, Hill would find a streaking Brown for a layup to give the Red Storm a 69-64 lead with 3:00 left.
The DSC defense would shine, preventing Seattle Pacific from scoring in the last 2:52 of the game and the offense would score its final seven points from the charity stripe to secure the monumental victory.
With the victory the Red Storm remain undefeated on the season and defeat a top ten-ranked team for the first time in school history.
Melissa Reich scored 14 points and was one of three SPU players in double figures, Maddie Maloney scored 11 points and Caitlyn Rohrback added 10 points. The Falcons would shoot only 36.8 percent from the field.
Seattle Pacific committed 18 turnovers to Dixie State 20 turnovers and both teams would grab 38 rebounds.
To add to Brown’s already stellar night, Hill would add19 points and Adams chipped in 13 points. The Red Storm had 8 team blocks with Carlson picking of five swats of her own. The Red Storm shot 50.9 percent from the field despite shooting only 26.7 percent form behind the arc.
For Brown’s performance, she was named MVP of the GNAC/PacWest Challenge and Hill made the all-tournament team.
The Red Storm will hit the road next week for yet another tough test. They will play Alaska Fairbanks on Friday night at 7:00 PM and the host school #15 Alaska Anchorage on Saturday night at 9:00 PM. You can follow the action live on www.dixieathletics.com <http://www.dixieathletics.com>
NOTES: Other members of all-tournament were Samantha Murphy and Rosalyn Nelson of Grand Canyon and Melissa Reich of Seattle Pacific…..The PacWest would win all four games in the challenge and the GNAC dropped all four.
GRAND CANYON 72 NORTHWEST NAZARENE 60-Samantha Murphy would score a game-high 19 points and Rosalyn Nelson chipped in 16 points to lead Grand Canyon University to a 72-60 win over Northwest Nazarene on the final day of the GNAC/PacWest Challenge.
For NNU, three players would score in double figures, Monica Garcia scored 14 points, Heather Adams 12 points and Briaunna King netted 10 points.
GCU led 36-29 at the half and would lead by as many as 21 points in the contest. Using a 13-4 lead to open the second half, the Antelopes would never look back.
