Benson named RMAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week

GOLDEN, Colo. – Colorado School of Mines’ Kiera Benson has been named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the Week as announced this afternoon by the RMAC.

Benson, a senior from Needville, Texas (Needville H.S.), got off to a strong start with a NCAA provisional qualifying in the 60 m dash winning the event with a time of 7.58 last Friday at the CSM Alumni Extravaganza. Benson’s time is currently fourth on the NCAA Division II Performance List. Benson also broke an 18-year old school record in the long jump narrowly missing a provisional mark with a jump of 5.54 m while finishing second in the event.

A unanimous selection Pre-Season All-RMAC selection this season, Benson garnered First Team All-RMAC honors in the 60 m and 200 m at the 2010 RMAC Indoor Championships. Benson set school records in both the 60 m (7.53) and 200 m (25.14) last season. At the 2010 Indoor National Championships Benson garnered All-American honors for the first time in her career in the 60 m.

The CSM track & field squads will compete at the Air Force All-Comers Meet on Friday, Jan. 14th in Colorado Springs, Colo. Mines will travel to Boulder, Colo. to participate in the CU Potts Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21st and 22nd.
