Beimfohr, Ashfield Set ESU Track Records at Lehigh Valley Season Opener

BETHLEHEM – Freshman Laura Beimfohr broke the school record in the pole vault in her first collegiate meet, and senior Asher Ashfield lowered his own record in the 60m dash to lead East Stroudsburg University at the Lehigh Valley Season Opener, held Friday night and Saturday morning at Rauch Field House at Lehigh University.

Seniors Lynn Mayer and Negus Graham, both returning All-Americans, were among the Warriors’ four individual winners as ESU opened its indoor track and field season after a very successful year both indoors and outdoors in 2009-10.

Mayer, four-time All-American in the high jump, tied for second at the NCAA Division II indoor championships last season and cleared 5-6 to reach the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. She tied for third at the NCAA outdoor championships and is one of two four-time All-Americans in ESU women’s track and field history.

Graham, an All-American in the indoor and outdoor 400m, opened his season with a time of 50.16 seconds. He was fourth in Division II indoors a year ago and ran the second-fastest time in the country in the prelims.

Beimfohr cleared 11-0 1/4 to place second in the meet and break the record of 10-6 1/4 set by teammate Stephanie Weber during her freshman season in 2008.

Ashfield (7.04 seconds) and junior Ian Melhorn (7.05) both broke the 60m dash record, which Ashfield set in 7.06 last season. ESU’s men’s team broke seven individual and three relay records during the 2009-10 indoor season, and also set two individual and three relay records outdoors.

ESU’s other two winning performances were turned in by sophomore Corey Young in the 60m hurdles (8.49) and junior Dan Johnson in the high jump (6-6). Sophomore Kyle Soden was second in both events, running 8.64 in the hurdles and clearing 6-4 in the high jump.

Both of the Warriors’ 4x400m relay teams won their events as well. Melhorn, Young, Graham and senior Greg Pammer took the men’s relay in 3:32.66, while the women’s quartet of sophomore Tara Getz, senior Jasmine Johnson, junior Adrienne Dieter and senior Trina Carito clocked a time of 4:11.01.

Elsewhere on the track, Pammer was fourth in the 400m (52.10) and a host of women record top-six finishes.

Freshman Rachel Pierantozzi and sophomore Lauren Hannan were second and third in the 60m dash, Hannan was fourth in the 200, and senior Jasmine Johnson (2nd), freshman Nicole Brown (3rd) and freshman Colleen Murphy (6th) gave ESU half of the top six in the 400m. Freshman Lindsay Steffen and sophomore Julie Granteed were third and fourth in the 800m.

ESU swept the second through fifth spots in the women’s 60m hurdles, led by sophomore Aniyah Williams (2nd, 9.61) and senior Brittany Knowles (3rd, 9.63). Dieter was fourth and Carito placed fifth.

Carito was also second in the high jump at 5-4 and returns to the Warriors for a fifth year of indoor track with a medical redshirt. The senior is a three-time PSAC champion, winning titles in the indoor pentathlon, outdoor heptathlon and indoor triple jump, and a two-time NCAA qualifier in the multi events.

Junior Devyn Emerich took third in the high jump and freshman Theresa Horn tied for fourth. Horn was also fourth in the triple jump, followed by junior Jenn Alpers and freshman Meghan Ragard. Freshman Janice Erb was sixth in the long jump and freshman Elizabeth Madden placed fifth in the shot put and sixth in the weight throw as she makes the transition to indoor track following volleyball season, where she was an outside hitter for the Warriors.

In the men’s field events, freshman Corey Kresge was second in the long jump and sophomore McHanley Alfred was third in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump. Freshman James Homola tied for second in the pole vault.

The Warriors will be away from action until Friday, January 14 when they head to Kutztown.
