BC Baseball and Softball participate in Buddy Readings through SAAC initiative

Tornados help out with Brevard Elementary and Pisgah Forest Elementary

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College Baseball and Softball teams supported the BC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee initiatives in participating in Buddy Readings with several schools located throughout Transylvania County.

"I think having Brevard College athletes act as reading buddies with elementary school kids is awesome. It is positive on both ends of the spectrum," commented Meredith Guice, teacher at Brevard Elementary. "It is very important for children to have positive role models and I believe this program does just that. It allows students to see at an early age how important getting an education is and if they are involved in athletics that there are endless possibilities." Guice went on to say, "I believe it is positive for college students because they probably had someone in their life that was influential in their education or athletics and with this program they have the opportunity to give back."

The Tornados went to both Pisgah Forest Elementary School and Brevard Elementary School throughout the months of November and the early part of December as the teams interacted with the students at both institutions, helping with homework, reading to the students and taking part in some of the day-to-day activities.

"It was definitely a great experience to be involved in the community with the Buddy Readings," said BC junior softball player and Exercise Science major Becca Curlee. "Helping the kids and seeing them read so well was inspiring. It really brought be back to the playground days. It was awesome to reminisce back to where it all started, now that we’re undergrad students."

With the BC baseball and softball teams starting their seasons and taking to the field when they come back in the spring, several other BC athletic teams will pick up where they left off as the Tornados continue to look to build relationships with members of the Brevard community and step in and stand out in all phases of their collegiate experiences.

BC softball player and Education major Brittany Jones summed up the experience as, "It showed me that teaching is the career I want to take. I want to help children learn through things and help them when they are struggling."
