KINGSVILLE, Texas – Behind the 22 point night of Aggie junior Milton Garner, the Cameron Aggies (9-4) topped Lone Star Conference crossover opponent Texas A&M-Kingsville (5-6), 57-47, on Monday night at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
Garner also led all scorers for the night, going 7-of-11 (63-percent) from the field and a perfect 7-of-7 at the charity stripe.
As has been the case this season with the Aggies, hard-nosed defense in the first half preceded explosive offensive shows in the second half. Cameron held their opponents to just 16 points in the first half and went into the break up by 10.
“This was a big win for us,” said Head Coach Wade Alexander who was an assistant at Texas A&M-Kingsville. “I’ve seen a lot of teams come all the way down here and for our team to come out with the victory means we were making things happen with the chances they gave us.”
The Aggies were able to capitalize on numerous free throw attempts late in the game to keep their lead. Sophomore Vinicius Telo picked up six points at the stripe, shooting 6-for-7 on the night. Telo finished with 17 total points and 10 rebounds.
The Javelinas trailed by as many as 18 and were able to build momentum late in the second to draw within three, but five quick points by Garner put the Aggies back in the driver seat.
Adam Morris and Ricky Simon combined for 28 points for the Hoggies on a 9-for-19 combined shooting night.
Cameron snapped a two-game losing streak and will end 2010 on a winning note with the victory. They return to the court Jan. 6 as they host Angelo State in Aggie Gym. Tip off is set for 8 p.m.
