#13 Riverhawks Too Strong for Javs

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The 13th ranked Northeastern State University women’s basketball team used a late first half run and the hot second half shooting of Taylor Lewis to knock off Texas A&M-Kingsville at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court on Thursday night, 71-55.
          
The Javelinas (1-5) and Riverhawks (4-0) were both struggling on the offensive end in the first half until NSU peeled off a 12-0 run over the final 2:34 to close out the half.  The Hoggies had previously tied the game at 18-18 after a three-pointer by Kelly Bastow (Bunbury, Aus./Bunbury Catholic HS) with 5:07 left in the half.
          
The Riverhawks made only one of their first 10 three-point attempts, but made their final two of the first half and then went 5-of-11 in the second half.  Lewis knocked down a trio of three-pointers in the second half and finished the game with a team high 16 points to go with five rebounds, five assists and four steals.
          
The Javelinas had their best shooting night of the season as they knocked down eight three-pointers while connecting on 50 percent of their tries.  The long-range bombs were split evenly between four players.
          
The Javelinas shot 43.2 percent from the field and made 9-of-14 from the foul line.  Novella Thomas (Corpus Christi/West Oso HS) led the team with 12 points as she went 5-for-8 from the field and 2-for-2 from the three-point arc.  Victoria Gonzalez (Hidalgo/Hidalgo HS) added 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks while Chelsea Solis (San Antonio/Wagner HS) chipped in with 11 points.  Meagan Barlow (D’Hanis/D’Hanis HS) led the team with five assists.
          
The Riverhawks had four players score in double figures.  In addition to Lewis, Jasmine Webb, Jasmine Wright and Tosha Tyler each hit the mark.  Webb had 15 points and a team high six rebounds.  Wright had 11 points and six assists while Tyler added 10 points.  NSU shot 42.4 percent from the field, made 8-of-23 three-point attempts and were 13-for-17 at the foul line.
          
Northeastern State enjoyed a 36-30 advantage on the boards and forced 20 turnovers while committing 12.
          
The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Central Oklahoma at home.
