WWU's Emily Jepsen Selected GNAC Player-of-the-Year

Middle blocker Emily Jepsen of Western Washington has been selected the 2010 GNAC Volleyball Player-of-the-Year.

Jepsen, who was the lone unanimous selection on the first team all-conference team, led the GNAC in service aces (46) and also ranked second in the conference in points (4.49), fourth in blocks (1.11) and kills (3.20) and fifth in hitting percentage (.308).

Also earning special awards were outside hitter Tereza Bendlova of Alaska Fairbanks and Seattle Pacific middle blocker Nikki Lowell. Bendlova, who transferred from the University of South Alabama, was selected the GNAC Newcomer-of-the-Year, while Lowell was voted the GNAC Freshman-of-the-Year

Diane Flick of Western Washington and Chris Johnson of Seattle Pacific were selected as the GNAC Co-Coach-of-the-Year each receiving four votes.

The two led their respective teams to 16-2 records in finishing in a tie for first place in the GNAC. Flick, a 1993 graduate of the University of Washington, has a 232-63 record in 11 seasons at WWU, while Johnson, a 2002 grad of Westmont, is 110-52 in six years at SPU.

It's the sixth GNAC Coach-of-the-Year award for Flick who also won the award in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2007 and shared the award with Johnson in 2006. Johnson earned his third Coach-of-the-Year award. He won it outright in 2005 before splitting it with Flick in 2006.

Seattle Pacific and Western Washington, who earned the second and third seeds, respectively, in this week's NCAA Division II West Regional tournament at San Bernardino, combined to dominate the GNAC All-Conference team each placing three players on the first team.

The Falcons were represented by Lowell and outside hitters Sarah Risser and Lindsey Wodrich. Risser is the lone first team repeater from the 2009 all-star team. Joining Jepsen on the first team are Viking setter Kari Rice and WWU libero Allison Gotz.

Completing the first team are outside hitter Kady Try of Central Washington and middle blocker Cortney Lundberg of Alaska Anchorage.
