Wolf, Pirates Survive First Round Of PBC Tournament

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Armstrong Atlantic State University volleyball team staved off an upset-minded UNC Pembroke squad, winning 3-2 in first-round action at the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Championships, hosted by the Pirates, on Friday afternoon. Game scores were: 26-24, 24-26, 24-26, 25-22, 15-11.

With the win, the third-seeded Pirates (21-12) advance to Saturday's semifinals against second-seeded Montevallo at 6:00 p.m. Montevallo survived an upset bid of its own, defeating seventh-seeded Francis Marion, 3-2, on Friday.

In an evently-contested match, Armstrong barely outhit the Braves for the evening, hitting .215 compared to .211 for the Braves, but it was a dominating fifth set that clinched the win for the Pirates as AASU had seven kills and just one error in 11 attacks in the decisive last set.

Sophomore Brittany Wolf dominated in the front row for the Pirates, hitting a match-high .583 with 16 kills and only two errors in 24 attacks to go with five blocks. Senior Gwen Clarke hit .370 with 14 kills - including a perfect four kills in four attacks in the fifth set - while junior Torrie Bevolo notched 12 kills and sophomore Amanda Jones added 11 kills. Freshman Megan Pando notched 53 assists and freshman Jessica Santaniello added 17 digs.

UNC Pembroke was led by Allie Schneider's match-high 18 kills and Rebecca Morgan's 17 kills. Tiara Anderson added 12 kills as well for the Braves. Heather Bolwerk notched 51 assists and Marissa Baker added a match-high 20 digs.

In the other half of the PBC Tournament bracket, top-seeded Flagler survived a game Augusta State squad to earn a 3-1 win. Fourth-seeded USC Aiken claimed a 3-1 win over fifth-seeded Lander.

Flagler will meet USC Aiken at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday in the first semifinal match at the Aquatics & Recreation Center, with Armstrong and Montevallo following at 6:00 p.m. The 2010 PBC Volleyball Championship match will take place on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., with the winner earning an automatic bid into the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championships.
