WBB: CPP 80, Dominican 55

POMONA, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball fell 80-55 to Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday but showed signs of life in the non-conference matchup at Kellogg Gym.

Senior guard Kelsey Janusch turned in another strong performance, leading Dominican (0-2) with 15 points, followed by junior guard Taki Te Koi's 13 points.

After trailing 7-5 early on, Dominican strung together an 11-3 lead that put the Lady Penguins ahead 14-10 with 12:01 to play in the first half. Dominican went cold for the next four minutes though and CPP rode the momentum shift to a 14-point halftime lead. CPP grew the second half lead to as many as 29 points in the second half before sending Dominican home with the 80-55 loss.

The Lady Penguins forced plenty of poor CPP shots, holding the Broncos to just .390 shooting on the day. Dominican also struggled from the field though, shooting .372, despite continuing to shoot the three-ball well with a .438 mark from behind the three-point line. Dominican was barely edged on the glass, 37-34, and was led by senior center Raquel Gomes' 10 rebounds.

The Broncos (1-1), who posted an 11-1 home record last season and finished second in the CCAA, were led by forward La'kenya Simon West's 22 points and six rebounds. Center Megan Ford and guard Reyana Colson each chipped in 16 points apiece and combined for another 11 rebounds.

Dominican will head north to Washington for its next two games. The Lady Penguins face Northwest Nazarene University and Central Washington University in the Central Washington Tournament on Friday and Saturday, November 19 and 20.
