UMSL Women's Basketball Comes up Short at Saint Louis University

ST. LOUIS, MO., November 4, 2010 - Junior Normeka Holder scored a game-high 20 points, including 16 in the second half, but the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team came up short at NCAA Division I Saint Louis University Thursday night in the 2010-11 exhibition opener for both teams, falling 82-78.

The Tritons held a two-point lead with five and a half minutes to play in the contest, but the Billikens' Janisha Geralds out-scored the Tritons, 6-1, over the next three minutes to give her team a 75-72 lead  with 2:31 to play.

Senior Kelly Carter added 13 points and 12 assists, while Holder added six steals and four rebounds to her stat line. Senior Kelly Mitchell also reached double figures, netting 10 points.

With UMSL holding a 43-39 halftime advantage, SLU opened the second half with a 13-4 run, taking a 52-47 lead at the 16:44 mark. Holder then scored 12 of her points in a 16-9 run, netting an open bucket with 11:44 to play to give the lead back to the Tritons, 63-62. A Caitlyn Moody three-pointer at 9:20 extended the lead to 66-62 before the SLU mounted a comeback.

The Tritons finished the game shooting 45.7 percent, while Saint Louis connected on 53.7 percent and held a 37-33 rebounding advantage. UMSL owned a 14-10 edge on the offensive end and out-scored its foes 15-6 in second chance points.

With the score at 29-29 in the first half, the Tritons went on a 9-2 run, taking their largest lead of the game at 38-31 on a pair of Carter free throws at the 1:57 mark en route to the first half lead.

UMSL forced 25 turnovers, but committed 22 on its own end, and out-scored SLU, 23-19, in points off turnovers. The Billikens went to the line 30 times, converting 22, while the Tritons were 9-of-13 at the line.

UMSL closes out its exhibition slate Sunday, traveling to Indiana State for a 2 p.m. tip.
