UAA fights off Crusaders, 3-1

NAMPA, Idaho (Nov. 4) – Lee Golden slammed a career-high 15 kills and fellow junior Jackie Matthisen added 11 kills Thursday to lift the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to its fourth straight victory with a 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22 decision over Northwest Nazarene at the Johnson Sports Center.

The Seawolves (16-7, 11-4 GNAC) also got six kills and six total blocks from senior Cortney Lundberg as they won for the eighth time in nine matches and defended their No. 7 West Region ranking.

The Crusaders (6-16, 6-10) were led by 13 kills from Becky Flores, plus 11 kills and 19 digs by Kailey Trautman, but could not keep up their momentum after a first-set victory.

UAA controlled the second set throughout and found itself tied 18-18 in the third set before scoring the next three points. NNU came back to narrow it to 21-20 before the Seawolves responded with four straight points, including two kills by Golden, to go up 2-1.

The Crusaders took leads of 9-7 and 12-11 midway through the fourth set before the Seawolves grabbed the lead permanently on three straight NNU errors. Matthisen, a 5-11 outside hitter, followed with consecutive kills to make it 20-16 and UAA would go up 20-15 a few moments later.

NNU pulled within a point three times before the end, but Matthisen managed to secure the victory with an ace on match point.

Freshman libero Quincy Haught equaled her personal-best with 19 digs, while setters Adriana Aukusitino and Siobhan Johansen managed 23 assists apiece for UAA. Aukusitino also came one shy of her career-best in digs with 11.

Offensively, Golden, a 5-9 right-side hitter, stole the show with a .387 attack percentage on 31 attempts. She also made a career-best eight digs in the victory – UAA’s fourth straight over NNU.

Sophomore right-side hitter Marie Borowikow had six kills on errorless hitting (.353), plus five block assists, and freshman middle blocker Robyn Burton contributed five kills and five block assists as well.

Lundberg tallied three solo blocks as the Seawolves held a 14-9 advantage in team blocks. With her stats Thursday, Lundberg moved into No. 10 on UAA’s career list for solo blocks with 68.

UAA moves on to Ellensburg, Wash., on Saturday to face Central Washington in its final regular-season road match of 2010. That contest begins at 6 p.m. ADT.
