Men's Basketball: Banchero's 38 Leads SPU Past Eastern

Chris Banchero scored 10 of his game-high 38 points during the final 1:22 Tuesday as Seattle Pacific went ahead early and held on for an 87-82 exhibition basketball victory over Eastern Washington at Reese Court.

In the only other men's game Tuesday, Broderick Gilchrest scored 21 points to lead Idaho State to a 92-79 win over Montana State Billings.

Seattle Pacific had lost its last six exhibition games against NCAA Division I opponents, last winning 76-68 against Murray State in 2006. The Falcons did record a regular-season win over a D-I competitor on Nov. 25, 2008 with a 75-65 victory at Southern Utah.

Banchero, who accounted for 56 of SPU's points as he distributed nine assists for 18 of his teammates' points, hit 11 of 19 shots from the field, including four of seven from 3-point range.

Andy Poling, a 6-foot-11 transfer from Gonzaga, had 16 points and six assists in his Falcons debut. Ryan Sweet added 13 points for SPU, which converted 62 percent of its shots (31 of 50).

EWU, which shot 46 percent (28 of 61), was led by the 22 points of Tremayne Johnson. Cliff Colimon scored 19 points and Kevin Winford had 14 for the Eagles.

Banchero hit a jumper at the halftime buzzer to give his team its largest first-half margin at 40-30.

SPU tallied the first seven points of the second half, claiming its largest lead at 47-30 with 18:10 left to play. Six different players scored for the Eagles during a 16-3 surge that brought them within 54-51. Banchero answered with a 3-pointer to halt that rally.

Eastern drew within 75-72 on a layin by Cliff Ederaine with 1:12 remaining. He was fouled, but missed the free throw opportunity to cut the deficit to two.

Banchero netted the next four points, on a three-point play and a free throw, to give SPU a 79-72 cushion with 40 seconds to play.

EWU narrowed the margin to 85-82 on a layin by Rashano McRae with 0:07 left. Jeff Dorman sealed the win on two free throws with one second on the clock.

The Falcons were also victorious in their last visit to Cheney, posting an 80-66 win at EWU in 1987.

Idaho State 92, Montana State Billings 79

Gilchrest was one of five players in double figures for Idaho State, including forward Abner Moreira, who had 20 rebounds in addition to 10 points. Moreira swept 11 balls off the offensive glass and also had six assists.

The Bengals, who led by just four points at halftime (41-37), also got 14 points from Kenny McGowen, 13 from Nick Mason and 10 from Deividas Busma.

The Yellowjackets, who were outrebounded 46-30, were led by forward Raason Young with 17 points.

Guard DeAndre Chambers had 16 points. Center Emery Henning and forward Robert Mayes each had 13. Henning also had nine rebounds and blocked five shots.

“We played a good game despite fumbling the ball and turning it over early,” said MSUB head coach George Pfeifer.“We played very anxious at the beginning, but slowed down and started to get some good looks and made some good shots.

"We dug our own ditch a lot of the times but we dug ourselves out and kept coming. The things we need to work on are fixable and we saw some things we liked, but credit a very good Idaho State team for the way they played.”

Women's Basketball: Seawolves Lose To Indiana

Newcomers Kylie Burns and Kaylie Robison combined for 22 points, but Alaska Anchorage could not hold on to a narrow halftime advantage Tuesday in a 72-49 exhibition loss to Indiana at Assembly Hall.

In Tuesday's other game, Montana State Billings got 17 points, six rebounds and five blocks shots from Montana State transfer Beata Bak in defeating Montana Western 77-73 at Alterowitz Gym.

Alaska Anchorage, ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division II by Women's D-II Bulletin, hung tough with the Hoosiers for the first 20 minutes, taking a 28-27 lead into halftime. But the Big Ten squad started the second half with a 10-0 run to take control.

The Hoosiers were led by 16 points on 12-of-16 free-throw shooting from starting guard Jori Davis, while Hope Elam came off the bench to score 15 points.

The Seawolves were paced by 12 points from Burns as the freshman from Kansas City nailed all four of her three-point tries. The rest of the Seawolves combined to hit just 3 of 18 from behind the arc, however.

Robison, a junior transfer from College of Eastern Utah, contributed 10 points (3-6 FG, 4-4 FT) and eight rebounds, all on the offensive end.

A pair of returners also had strong showings as guard Sarah Herrin nailed three three-pointers in the first half to stake UAA to its lead, while forward Hanna Johansson tallied eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Herrin also snagged five rebounds at one of college basketball's most storied venues.

Bak, who also had three assists and two steals, led four players in double figures in MSU Billings' exhibition victory.

Freshman Bobbi Knudsen came off the bench to hit four of six three-point shots and score 16 points, while starters Kayla Ryan and Sarah McNamee each had 14 points.

Ryan led the Yellowjackets with seven points and four assists, while McNamee had four rebounds and three assists.

Nicole Tams led Montana Western with 21 points, while Samantha Bignell scored 13 points.

Each team had identical 30 of 63 shooting performances from the floor, but MSUB made nine of 18 three-pointers, while Western was just two of nine from the arc.

“Kayla (Ryan) and Beata (Bak) did a nice job on the inside working together,” MSUB coach Kevin Woodin said.

“They are going to get better and better as they get more experience.  At this point, I like the depth of our team as we have more depth than a year ago. We have a lot of new faces to mix in, and it will take some time to develop.”
