Gonzalez Sets UWF Block Record in Spring Hill Sweep

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida volleyball team (23-6, 9-1 GSC) swept Spring Hill (23-6, 9-1 SSAC), 25-10, 25-20, 25-19, tonight at the UWF Field House. UWF held Spring Hill to a .090 hitting percentage for the night. Chelsea Wilhoite led UWF with 10 kills. Senior Kara Gonzalez became the UWF career leader in blocks with 277 for her career.

In set one, the Argos battled with the Badgers early, with the score tying five times before a kill by senior Kara Gonzalez (St. Augustine) gave the Argos the 7-5 lead. A block by Chelsea Wilhoite (Jacksonville) and Abby Timmer (Grand Rapids, Mich.) made the score 13-8, Argos. A Wilhoite kill gave the Argos a nine-point lead, 18-9. The point was part of a five-point run by the Argos, which forced the Badgers to take a time out down 20-9. A service ace by Anna Stoecklein (St. Charles, Mo.) gave the Argos the set, 25-10. For the set, UWF hit .346 and held Spring Hill to a -.200 hitting percentage. UWF had four blocks in the set.

Gonzalez had a block assist to make the score 4-4 in game one. The block made the senior the all-time UWF leader in blocks, with 277 for her career. She surpassed Kristy Krause, who had 276 blocks for her career from 2000-03.
UWF never lost the lead in set two. UWF took the first point of the set with an ace by Molly Pearce (Tallahassee). A kill by Timmer made the score 4-0. A Gonzalez kill gave the Argos a five-point lead, 9-4. Spring Hill came within one with a kill by Abbey Roam, to make the score 10-9. A kill by Chandler Carney (Indianapolis, Ind.) gave the Argos the 15-11 lead. A Gonzalez ace gave the Argos a three-point lead, 20-17, and forced a Spring Hill timeout. Spring Hill went on a three-point run to come within one, 17-16. Four straight points by the Argos put the score at 21-17. Spring Hill won three straight points to make the score 24-18. A kill by Jamie Nichols (Crawfordville) gave the Argos set two, 25-20.

A service ace by Chelsea Wilhoite put the Argos up two, 13-11. A kill by Gonzalez gave the Argos the 17-14 lead. An attack error by Jamie Hall made the score 21-16 UWF and led to a Spring Hill timeout. A Wilhoite kill made the score 22-19. Back-to-back kills by Katie Johnson (Tallahassee) gave UWF set three, 25-19. UWF out-hit Spring Hill, .324 to .235 for the set.

UWF has clinched first place in the Gulf South Conference (GSC) East Division. This is the fourth straight year the Argos have won the GSC East. UWF will host the GSC tournament November 12th and 13th at the UWF Field House. The winner of the tournament will earn the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.

UWF will host regional-foe Saint Leo on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Argos’ final regular season home match. UWF defeated Saint Leo, 3-2, on the road earlier this season. The UWF seniors will be honored prior to the match. UWF will conclude the regular season on Monday on the road against Mobile. The match against the NAIA school will start at 7 p.m.
