LOS ANGELES - Hillary Williamson racked up a season-high 20 kills and finished with 13 digs, leading the UC San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-2 victory over Cal State L.A. in California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Saturday night at the Eagles Nest.
The Golden Eagles built a quick 2-0 lead, but the Tritons would storm back to win the final three sets and spoil Cal State L.A.'s Senior Night festivities, 15-25, 21-25, 25-14, 25-23, 15-12.
UCSD, which extended its current winning streak to 10 in a row, improves to 17-7 overall and 14-6 in the CCAA, keeping pace with Cal State East Bay for second place in the league standings. The Pioneers, who are also 14-6 in conference play, defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-1 on Saturday after losing to the Golden Eagles in straight sets on Friday.
Cal State L.A. saw its three-match winning streak come to an end, falling to 14-10 overall and 11-9 in conference.
In addition to Williamson's efforts, Roxanne Brunsting finished with 11 kills, 27 assists and four blocks, while Katie Condon tallied 10 kills and 20 digs. Janessa Werhane led all players with 22 digs and Thalia McCann dished out 20 assists.
Marquis Mora finished with 15 kills and six blocks for the Golden Eagles, while Zuzana Cizova had 15 kills and 17 digs and Chelsea Hamilton added 12 kills.
UCSD got things turned around after a slow start to hit .204 for the match, while Cal State L.A. cooled off in the final three sets and wound up hitting at a .179 clip. The Tritons hit at a .438 percentage in the final set with seven kills and no errors, while the Golden Eagles hit just .083 with nine kills and seven errors.
UCSD grabbed an early 6-5 lead in the opening set on a Brunsting kill and an attack error on CSULA's Mary Laupepa, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 13-5 run to lead 18-10 and never looked back. Three straight kills by Cizova and Hamilton made it 21-11 in favor of the home team and a Mora kill moments later ended it at 25-15.
The Tritons led 15-14 in the second frame when the Golden Eagles scored seven of the next nine points for a 21-17 advantage. Three straight points would bring UCSD to within 22-21, but a kill by Natalia Gonzalez and consecutive Triton attack errors finished the set for a 2-0 CSULA lead at intermission.
UCSD took control early in the third set, grabbing an 8-3 lead on kills from Condon and Williamson and an error by Briana Fields. The Golden Eagles closed to within two at 16-14, but the Tritons scored nine straight points to wrap up the set and get on the board, 2-1. Back-to-back service aces by Condon highlighted the run.
The Tritons were on top early in the fourth set as well, until a 5-1 Golden Eagle run tied the score at 14-14 and forced a UCSD timeout. The Tritons followed with two straight points and took a 21-16 lead on a Gonzalez error, but the home team rallied once more, pulling to within 24-23. Williamson sent down the final kill, however, and UCSD tied the match at two games apiece.
The Golden Eagles held an early 2-1 advantage in the fifth set, but a 6-1 Triton jaunt would give UCSD an 11-6 lead and Cal State L.A. would get no closer than two points the rest of the way. A Condon kill brought the Tritons to match-point and another Laupepa attacke error ended it, 15-12.
UCSD will now conclude the regular season at Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino next Friday and Saturday, respectively.
