RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – Just two days before the start of the 2010 Gulf South Conference Volleyball Tournament, Arkansas Tech had five players named to one of the two All-GSC West Division Teams, along with senior middle blocker Sarah Von Lienen (Lakeland, Tenn.) being named the West Division Player of the Year.
The All-GSC teams are voted on by the league’s head coaches in their own respective divisions and the coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players.
Von Lienen, senior setter Kera Dukic (White Lake, Mich.), senior right side hitter Ashlynn Hamrick (Jackson, Mich.) and junior outside hitter Laura Farney (Morton, Ill.) were named First-Team All-GSC West Division selections, while junior libero Brennae Benda (Woodstock, Ill.) was named a Second-Team All-GSC West Division honoree.
“I am very pleased that we had five players on All-GSC West Division Team,” Golden Suns Head Coach Kristy Bayer said. “The girls have worked very hard for this and are all very deserving.”
With her West Division Player of the Year honor, Von Lienen becomes the fifth Golden Sun player to earn that honor and the first since Ningning Liu was honored in 2002. In addition, she is also one of seven Tech players to be named an All-GSC West Division selection three times.
“I am extremely happy for Sarah for being named the West Division Player of the Year. She has had a great four years at Tech and deserves this honor,” said Bayer, who is the all-time winningest coach in Tech history with 165 career victories.
Von Lienen, who is a three-time First-Team All-GSC honoree, earns the West Division Player of the Year honor after helping lead the Golden Suns to a 30-4 overall record and its second West Division title in the last three years. On the season, Von Lienen leads the team in kills (373), kills per set (3.04), blocks (89) and blocks per set (0.9) and she is hitting .339. She earned three GSC West Division Player of the Week honors this season and earned 14 Player of the Week accolades in her career. She is currently standing fourth in the school’s career kill chart (1,403), second on the school’s all-time attack percentage list (.316) and second on the school’s Division II era block chart (475). In addition, she is third on the career double-digit kill matches list with 71 and has had seven career 20-plus kill matches.
Dukic, who was a Second-Team All-GSC West Division selection last season, moves up to the first team this year after recording 1,177 assists, which is second in the GSC and averaging 11.1 assists per set. On the season, Dukic has had three double-doubles and has had 50 or more assists in four matches. Dukic currently stands fourth on the school’s all-time assist chart with 2,614 and her 11.1 assists per set average this season is third on the school’s single-season list.
Hamrick, who is one three seniors on this year’s Golden Suns team, earns First-Team All-GSC West Division honors after recording 205 kills, 33 blocks and a .331 hitting percentage. On the season, Hamrick, who was named the GSC West Division Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 26, has had five double-digit kill matches and became the 12th Tech player to record 1,000 career kills with her 13 kills last Thursday against Henderson State. She stands 12th on the school’s all-time kill chart with 1,007 entering this weekend’s GSC Tournament.
Farney repeats as a First-Team selection this year after being second on the team in both kills (331) and digs (326). On the season, Farney was named a four-time GSC West Division Player of the Week honoree, including earning Offensive Player of the Week honors on three successive weeks. In addition, she leads the Golden Suns with 13 double-doubles and has recorded 26 double-doubles in her career, which is eighth on the school’s all-time chart and she had 20 double-figure kill matches this year. She is currently 27 kills shy of joining the school’s career 1,000-Kill Club.
Benda earns her second straight Second-Team All-GSC West Division honor this season after leading the Golden Suns in digs with 471 and dig per set (4.3). On the season, she had double-figure digs in 25 matches, including recording 20 or more digs in seven matches. Benda, who was named the GSC West Division Freshman of the Year in 2008, is currently second all-time on the school’s career dig chart with 1,368 and is 42 digs shy of surpassing former Golden Sun Racheal Urquhart (2005-08) as the school’s all-time leader in digs.
The Golden Suns will return to action on Friday, Nov. 12 as they open up play in the GSC Tournament against East Division No. 4 seed West Alabama (10-20 overall, 2-8 GSC) at 2:30 p.m. at the UWF Fieldhouse in Pensacola, Fla.
