Ship’s Firepower Keeps Marauders at Bay

Millersville, Pa. - Behind the relentless attack of Jill Edwards, Jenny Pry and Libby Woffindin, the Shippensburg women's volleyball team invaded Pucillo Gymnasium Tuesday evening and captured a 3-1 PSAC Eastern Division win over homestanding Millersville.

Shippensburg (18-15, 8-10 PSAC), which had already clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament, won the match by scores of 25-19, 25-23, 24-26, 25-23. After falling behind two sets to none, the Marauders (14-21, 4-14 PSAC) stole the third set in extra points by rallying from a 23-20 deficit.

A Ship attack error helped the Marauders close the gap to two points, but Woffindin tallied a kill to put  Ship one point away from a sweep. But with two Allison Huss (Coatesville/ Bishop Shanahan) kills, one from Mary Paul (Philadelphia/St. Basil Academy) and a Ship block error, the Marauders staved off match point and jumped in front, 25-24. Shippensburg called a timeout to in an attempt to stop the momentum swing, but Paul delivered her fourth kill of the set, putting the Marauders right back into the match.

Set four was just as tight and it looked as if Millersville was about to send the match to a deciding fifth set. The teams stood tied 13 times and neither held a lead of more than three points. The Marauders built a three-point advantage at 20-17 following back-to-back kills from Jesse Miller (Fleetwood/Fleetwood) and one from Brittany Lease (Spring Grove/Spring Grove). Ship went to Woffindin and Pry to retie the game at 20 apiece. Lease, however, put Millersville back in front 22-20 with two more kills. Shippensburg called another timeout, but unlike the third set, this timeout worked to perfection. The Lady Raiders ripped four kills and were helped by a Millersville attack error as they stormed ahead and closed out the set and match.

Woffindin totaled 17 kills and just one error on 25 swings and added six block assists. Pry totaled 18 kills and three errors, and Edwards racked up a match-high 20 kills.

The Marauders were led by Lease's season-high 13 kills and .407 hitting percentage. Kelsey Gearhart (Greencastle/Greencastle-Antrim) added eight kills and three block assists. Freshmen setters Jessica Franz (New Freedom/Susquehannock) and Katie Pisano (Exton/Bishop Shanahan) led the team with 19 and 18 assists respectively. Pisano also totaled 11 digs.

It was Millersville's final home match of the season but will try to close the season on a high note Saturday at West Chester. Start time is 1 p.m.
