Seniors lead UAA men past UCSD, 67-52

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Nov. 14) – Seniors Casey Robinson and Brandon Walker scored 17 points apiece and the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team used a strong defensive effort Sunday to earn a 67-52 victory over UC San Diego at Disney’s Division II Tip-Off Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The Seawolves (1-2) also got 12 points from all-tournament selection Taylor Rohde and 11 points off the bench from freshman guard Travis Thompson to post their first win of the season.

UCSD (2-1) got a game-high 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting from freshman guard James McCann but the rest of the Tritons shot just 13 of 35 (37 percent) from the field. Tournament MVP Christian Hatch, a 6-8 junior center, was held to six points on 2-of-8 shooting after averaging 18.0 points in the first two games.

After surrendering halftime leads in its first two games – losses to Dixie State and Lewis – UAA was able to extend its 28-24 advantage against UCSD, beginning the second half with an 11-2 run, capped by one of Robinson’s five three-pointers.

The Tritons were able to slice UAA’s lead to five on two occasions, at 39-34 and 41-36, but could get no closer.

Robinson, a 6-6 forward, nailed half of his 10 three-point attempts and Walker, a 6-3 wing, was 3 of 5 from long distance, helping UAA to 50 percent (9 of 18) as a team. The Seawolves were nearly perfect from the free-throw line as well, making their first 15 shots and finishing 18 of 20.

Thompson, a 6-1 freshman from Dimond High School, made all six of his charities and grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds to provide a spark off the bench. Senior point guard Drew Robinson led UAA with four assists and no turnovers, while Casey Robinson pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.

The Seawolves have the next 10 days off before taking the Sullivan Arena court Nov. 25 for a first-round game against reigning Big Sky Conference champion Weber State in the 33rd annual Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.

Men's All-Tournament Team:
