Purple Knights Suffer 75-57 Setback At Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College men's basketball team (2-3, 0-2 Northeast-10 Conference) struggled in the second half in falling at Franklin Pierce University, 75-57, on Tuesday evening.

Sophomore Derek Knutty (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney) recorded 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Purple Knights, while freshman Michael Holton, Jr. (Portland, Ore./Sunset/The Winchendon School) scored a team-best 12 points and added three steals.

For Franklin Pierce (3-2, 1-1 NE-10), Kinard Dozier led four Ravens in double figures with 18 points. Ellis Cooper added 17 points and four steals, while Eric Jean-Guillaume notched 13 points and seven assists, and Nigel Van Oostrum recorded 12 points and six steals.

Franklin Pierce opened strong, and led for nearly the entire first half. Saint Michael's, however, pulled close right before halftime, as the Purple Knights scored the final eight points of the period to trim their deficit to 35-34 at intermission.

The Purple Knights continued their run to start the second half, and led by four, 40-36, with 18:25 remaining. Franklin Pierce then went on a 12-0 run over the next 3:30 to take the lead for good at 48-40, and the margin grew to double digits shortly thereafter.

Saint Michael's was undone by 21 turnovers and 39 percent shooting from the field in the contest. Franklin Pierce, meanwhile, shot 49 percent from the floor, and buried 11-of-22 3-pointers (compared to just 1-of-10 for the Purple Knights).

Saint Michael's returns to action on Sunday with a 3:30 p.m. contest at league-rival Stonehill College.
