NO. 7 WEST FLORIDA ADVANCES WITH 5-0 WIN OVER HARDING

Duncan Breaks UWF Record in Points

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 7 West Florida women’s soccer team started its defense of the Gulf South Conference championship with a 5-0 win over Harding in the semifinals of the GSC Tournament at Brosnaham Park on Friday afternoon.  UWF (17-2, 7-0 GSC) will advance to face North Alabama in a rematch of last year’s championship game, and kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7.

Senior Shakira Duncan (Kingston, Jamaica/Darton) scored her fourth straight hat trick in the win, and she broke another UWF record with her 149th career point, passing Dernelle Mascall who held the previous record of 146.

Duncan scored the hat trick, but it was sophomore Jodi-Ann Robinson (Richmond, British Columbia/Palmer Secondary School) that got the scoring started in the 20th minute.  The forward made two nice moves in the box to break free of two defenders and score her first of two goals.

Duncan’s first two goals came less than a minute apart; her first was at the 23:54 mark as she beat multiple players off the dribble and scored an easy one-on-one opportunity against the keeper.  Off the kickoff, Duncan scored again at the 24:36 mark off an assist by senior Noha Saleh (Wellington, Fla./Nova Southeastern) to make the score 3-0 UWF.

After the halftime break, the Argos wasted little time to add to their lead, as Duncan scored her third of the game at the 47:14 mark.  She was assisted by junior Tina Murray (Kingston, Jamaica/Darton), and the goal clinched her fourth straight hat trick.  The goal was Duncan’s 30th of the season and 63rd of her career, extending her school record in goals.

Robinson closed out the scoring for UWF with her second of the day at the 61:55 mark.  She gathered a loose ball in the box and beat the keeper for her second of the day and 19th of the year.

Harding (8-9-1, 4-2 GSC) goalkeeper Chelsea Hornbeck was busy in goal for the Lady Bisons, but she made four saves in a good performance.  Junior Ali Ryan (Batemans Bay, Australia/Darton) made three saves for UWF.  The Argos led the shot count 27-14, including a 15-4 edge in the first half, and UWF also held a 15-3 advantage in corner kicks.

North Alabama defeated Christian Brothers 2-0 in the other semifinal match on Friday, and they will face the Argonauts in the GSC championship match for the second straight year.  UWF defeated UNA 2-1 on the road earlier this season, and they were 3-0 against the Lions last year.  Fans can follow all of the action live at www.GoArgos.com.
