No. 18 Bronchos come back to defeat No. 16 Mules, 82-79

(Las Vegas, Nev.) –  The No. 16 Central Missouri Mules let a late lead slip away on the final day of the Las Vegas High Desert Classic, falling to No. 18 Central Oklahoma, 82-79. UCM had a chance to tie it at the buzzer, but Bryce Brunz’ 25 footer missed the rim.
    
The Bronchos (2-0) jumped out early on the Mules (1-1) with a 10-4 lead in a fast-paced first half. UCM cut into that advantage, cutting it to 10-9 on a three from Tyrone Young with 12:02 to play. Central Oklahoma kept the lead though, and used a 7-2 run to go back up by six with 9:43 left. The Mules started a rally with 7:00 remaining on a 12-0 spurt that saw junior guard Boo Hunter score six points, and senior forward Joel Barkers put up four. It gave the Mules a 25-19 advantage with 3:30 left in the half.
    
Central Missouri took a 33-28 lead into the half, and turned the ball over only three times while grabbing a 25-20 rebound edge. Neither squad shot the ball well, with UCM hitting 29.4 percent from the floor,
and UCO drilling 30.4 percent.
    
The Mules held that lead through the second half, hovering between four and nine points, but the Bronchos made their move with UCM leading 67-58 with 5:06 to play. They went on a 7-0 run, thanks to five points from Shane Carrol, tying it at 67 with 3:35 left.
    
Another Carrol three with 2:21 on the clock gave UCO its first lead of the half, and a couple Daunte Williams free throws with 41 seconds left made it a five point advantage. The Mules cut it to only
two on a three by Young with four seconds left, but UCO drilled one of two from the line to give UCM only a chance to tie it on a buzzer beater.
    
Hunter paced the Mules with 24 points on the day, while Young had 13 and Barkers had 11. The Mules were just 4-of-20 from the three-point line in the game, and hit 38 percent from the field in the game. UCO hit 40.6 percent, but turned it over only eight times compared to 13 for UCM. The Mules had a 45-31 rebound edge, led by nine from Barkers.
    
The Mules will play Fontbonne on Wednesday night in the home opener at 7:30 p.m.
