Fall Season Draws to a Close for Women’s Rowing

Panthers put in a respectable performance in last race of 2010

FELLSMERE, Fla. (Women’s Rowing) – Before Florida Tech shifts its focus to preparing for its championship season in the spring, the Panthers wrapped up their fall by participating in the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Fall Classic Saturday at Canal 54.

The Crimson and Gray participated in the varsity eight, varsity four and freshman/novice four events. Racing alongside Tech was Nova Southeastern, Barry, Rollins, Florida State and Jacksonville.

The Panthers’ varsity eight was edged out by Nova Southeastern’s “B” boat for fifth place, finishing at 12:38 in the second race of the morning. Nova Southeastern “A” took top honors with a time of 11:48. Donning the unique red, black and white uniform was coxswain Stephanie Spangler, 8 Erin McDevitt, 7 Taylor Woodard, 6 Amber Maiwald, 5 Taylor Barvais, 4 Megan Taylor, 3 Marie McBride, 2 Kathleen OrRico and bow Alex Barber.

In Tech’s next event, the freshman/novice four, coxswain Emlyn MacKenzie led a boat, which included 4 Carla Deras, 3 Heather Frohling, 2 Brian Silver and bow Carolyn Chabuz, to third place. Collectively, they clocked in at 14:45. Nova Southeastern “A” once again snatched first with a time of 13:02 followed by Jacksonville at 14:37.

With one race remaining, coxswain Sarah Vines made sure her team closed out its fall season on good note. She along with 4 Amanda Horbert, 3 Jennifer Gillette, 2 Aline Seekins and bow Guinevere Shaw notched third-place, finishing at 13:30. Barry’s “A” boat would prove victorious as it stopped the timer at 13:16. Nova Southeastern “A” came in second.

“It’s always nice to win, but I’m happy with the level we’re at right now,” Tech head coach Adam Thorstad said. “Our freshman/novice four boat was a pleasant surprise today. They rowed very well and placed third. In all, it was good to see our girls cheer each other on throughout the morning. Hopefully, our performance in the fall coupled with our goals will give the girls the motivation needed to work hard and improve this offseason.”

One of the Panthers’ goals is to earn a second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II Championships. They will work towards that objective in the next few months as they prepare to open their spring season around March.
