NABC/Division II men's basketball pre-season poll (Nov. 3, 2010)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The two teams that faced off in last year’s NCAA Division II national championship game head up the list for the 2010-11 season in the NABC/Division II pre-season coaches poll, as defending champion Cal Poly Pomona has been tabbed as the No. 1 team and Indiana (Pa.), the team the Broncos dispatched in the finals, came in at second in the rankings.

The Broncos have played in the last two national title games, losing to Findlay in the 2009 title tilt on a shot at the buzzer.  Findlay was third in the pre-season poll with two other teams from the NCAA’s Midwest region, Bellarmine and Grand Valley State, taking the next two spots.  Florida Southern was put in the sixth spot, followed by a pair of 2010 Elite Eight participants, Bentley and St. Cloud State.  Winona State came in at No. 9 and Seattle Pacific rounds out the top 10.

Tarleton State opens the second ten at No. 11, followed by West Liberty, Arkansas Tech – who was ranked No. 1 in the final poll last season – South Carolina Aiken and Metropolitan State.  Central Missouri came in at No. 16, with Rollins, Central Oklahoma and two more of last year’s national quarterfinalists, Saint Joseph’s and Midwestern State, completing the top 20.

The final five teams in the pre-season rankings are all from the south or east coast: Alabama-Huntsville, Merrimack, Philadelphia, Montevallo and Clark Atlanta.

The first regular season poll will be released on Tuesday, Nov. 23.  The 2010-11 season gets underway on Friday, Nov. 12 and will end at the Elite Eight in Springfield, Mass., on Saturday, March 26.
