MSOC: Catawba bows out of SAC Touranment with 2-1 loss at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Second-seeded Carson-Newman avoided an upset by Catawba in the opening round of the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament with a 2-1 win at McCown Field on Wednesday night. The Eagles improve to 12-4-1 and advance to a Friday semifinal. The seventh-seeded Catawba Indians end their season at 10-8-1.

After a scoreless first half the teams combined for the three goals in a span of a minute and 20 seconds around 10 minutes into the final period. Catawba scored first on sophomore Carson Smith’s (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) team-leading ninth goal at the 53:55 mark. He fired in a shot for 20-yards out to end the scoreless deadlock.

Carson-Newman wasted little time in scoring the equalizer. Less than a minute expired when Anthony Chiappetta knocked a ball loose in front of the Catawba goal and Adam Thomas converted at the 54:50 mark. Twenty-one seconds later the Eagles had the lead on a goal by Robert Hill.

The Eagles held a 13-7 edge in shots and had a 9-4 advantage in the second half. Luke McCarthy (Naples, FL/Naples HS) recorded four saves for the Indians. Jordan Moore stopped a pair of shots for Carson-Newman.
