Central Oklahoma holds wrestling intrasquad

EDMOND (Nov. 3) – Trison Graham rallied for a 9-7 overtime win over Casy Rowell in a battle of returning starters at 133 pounds to spark the Blue team to a  28-13 win over the Bronze in Central Oklahoma’s annual intrasquad dual Wednesday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronze led 13-9 after Ben Morgan’s second-period fall at 149 pounds, but the Blue went back on top in the next match on Chris Watson’s first-period pin and won the final five matches to claim the victory.

“It was good for us to get out and compete in a real dual situation and some guys really stepped up,” UCO coach David James said.  “I saw some good things, but we certainly have a lot of work to do and a long way to go.  It’s time for us to get out and compete against outside competition.”

The Bronchos do just that Sunday, opening the 2010-11 season at the OCU Open.  First-round action begins at 9 a.m. at Oklahoma City University’s Abe Lemons Arena and the tournament runs straight through.

Graham and Rowell hooked up in the most intriguing bout of the night as the two sophomores are set battle it out for the 133-pound starting berth.  Graham started most of last season at 133, while Rowell is moving up a weight after going 31-10 as the starter at 125 last year.

Rowell had a takedown and reverse in building a 5-2 lead after two periods, but Graham tied it with an escape and takedown in the opening minute of the final stanza.  Rowell went ahead 7-5 on a reverse with 50 seconds left and Graham answered with a reverse of his own 12 seconds later to make it 7-7.

Graham controlled Rowell the rest of the way to force the match into overtime and then got the winning takedown 38 seconds into the one-minute sudden victory period.

The only other match that went overcame came at 165 where returning national qualifier Derrick Adkins scored a takedown with 3.7 seconds left in the sudden victory period to pull out a 3-1 triumph over Kelly Henderson.

Watson and 141 Ky Corley had falls for the Blue, while Colton Gallo added a 14-3 major decision.  Morgan had the lone pin for the Bronze, with Michael Walkup adding a 16-5 major decision.
