COLORADO SPRINGS - Metro State men's soccer player Steven Emory was named Daktronics Central Region Player of the Year for the second straight year on Tuesday, becoming the first player in school history to achieve that feat twice. Emory joined five other Roadrunners on the all-region teams. Emory and Tyler Wilson were both named to the first team and Scott Grode, Chris Yoder, Andrew Mejia and Issa Bissau were all second team selections. The six players were the most named all-region in one season in school history.
Emory, a senior midfielder from Fort Collins, Colo., led the Roadrunners with 17 goals and 10 assists for 44 points, ranking second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in each category during conference play. He was the only player in the RMAC to rank in the top-five in all three categories. His points total this season ranked as the third-most in school history and his goals were tied for the fourth-most. He also put a school record 48 shots on goal this year. Emory broke school records for consecutive games with at least one point (11) and consecutive games with at least one assist (6).
Emory has now been named Daktronics Central Region Player of the Year twice and has also twice been named RMAC Player of the Year. Last season, he went on to be named Daktronics second team All-America.
Wilson, a senior defender from Aurora, Colo., scored one goal and added an assist for three points. As the team's top defender, he had a plus/minus rating of +31. He missed four games with an injury and the team had a 1-3 record in those four games. His defense helped the Roadrunners post 0.96 goals against average and 10 shutouts. He started all 10 shutouts in the field. Last season, Wilson was a Daktronics second team all-region selection and this year, was named first team All-RMAC.
Grode, a junior forward from Gilbert, Ariz., was second on the team with 10 goals and 25 points, adding five assists. In conference games, he ranked fourth in the RMAC in goals and led the conference in shots attempted. Last season he was named Daktronics second team all-region and this year was named second team All-RMAC.
Yoder, a junior midfielder from Gilbert, Ariz., was the team's defensive center midfielder, but still provided some offense, scoring three goals and two assists for eight points. He posted a +27 plus/minus rating during the year. He was a second team All-RMAC pick this year.
Mejia, a redshirt freshman defender from Littleton, Colo., led the Roadrunners with a +34 plus/minus rating this year. He scored one goal and had two assists for four points, while attempting 15 shots from the back row.
Bissau, a sophomore goalkeeper from Denver, was named first team All-RMAC and finished the year with a 0.90 goals against average and had a .818 save percentage with nine solo shutouts. Bissau posted an 11-5-1 record and finished second in the RMAC in GAA and save percentage in conference games, while leading the RMAC in shutouts. He was named RMAC Male Athlete of the Month in September.
Metro State finished the year 12-6-2 overall and 8-4-2 in the RMAC.
