Mency, Strothers Lift No. 22 Merrimack Over Bloomfield 110-82

WALTHAM, Mass.- Senior Darin Mency (Hagerstown, Md.) tied a career-high for  points with 34 and sophomore Aaron Strothers (Wareham, Mass.) set a new personal best with 32 as the No. 22 Merrimack men’s basketball team claimed a 110-82 victory over Bloomfield at the Bentley Tip-Off Classic. The win Saturday evening gave the Warriors a 2-0 overall record while the Deacons moved to 1-1 on the year.

With all five starters amassing double-digits in points, Merrimack shot 61% from the field and 52.9% from three-point land. Strothers and Roland Davis (Deer Park, N.Y.) each posted a double-double. Strothers added a game-high and career-best 14 rebounds to go along with his 32 points on 14-of-16. Davis netted 16 points and dished out 10 assists in the game, setting a new career-high.

Mency drained six threes to go along with six rebounds and three dimes. The senior co-captain connected on 14 of his 22 field goal attempts.

Wayne Mack (Paterson, N.J.) and Tyler Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively, for Merrimack.

The Warriors held a slight edge at halftime, owning a three-point lead at the break 55-52. Merrimack put on an encore performance in the second period, adding another 55 points to bring the grand total to 110.

Once again, the Warriors continued their stellar play in the paint by outscoring Bloomfield 60-34 inside the paint.

Gage Daye paced the Deacons with 20 points in the contest. For the game, Bloomfield shot 43.2% from the floor and 58.3% from the free throw line.

The last time that the Warriors eclipsed the century mark in points was December 8, 2009 at Southern N.H., a 101-92 win for the Blue and Gold.

“Bloomfield is a great team and our guys really played their hearts out tonight,” said head coach Bert Hammel. “We did a lot of things well today and we’ll need to bring the same intensity into our next game.”

Merrimack will square-off against Northeast-10 rival Bentley November 17 in Waltham, Mass. The Falcons were ranked No. 7 in the NABC National Preseason Poll while the Warriors garnered a No. 22 ranking.
