Martin voted Scholar-Athlete for second consecutive year
ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team had three All-Conference selections, the league announced. today. Abby Martin, a forward, was joined on the first team by defender Brittany Downs (Orlando, Fla.), while goalkeeper Chelsea Parker (Richmond, Va.) was named to the second team. The Scholar Athlete Award for women's soccer went to Martin, who wins for the second year in a row.
Martin, from Greer, S.C., is a senior majoring in Elementary Education with a 3.91 grade point average.
She was the 2007 SAC Freshman of the Year, and is a three-time All-Conference performer and was named All-Region in 2007 and 2008. This season, she led the SAC in goals and points per match.
She is a member of Alpha Chi honor society and was named to the ESPN Academic All-District team for the third year in a row this season.
Martin is active in campus and community projects, including serving as president of the Mars Hill Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She also is a member of the Campus Activity Board. Abby also has helped raise money for Make-A-Wish, volunteers at a local school every week, made a mission trip to Kenya to help build a houses and a church and has supported a child from the Dominican Republic through World Vision for the past four years.
Lenoir-Rhyne University junior midfielder Catherine Hauck was named the 2010 Women's Soccer Player of the Year, while Lenoir-Rhyne Coach Adrian Blewitt was named Women's Soccer Coach of the Year. L-R's Denesha Soto was named the conference's Co-Freshman of the Year with Juliana Conte of Catawba.
The All-Conference teams are selected by the league's head coaches.
The statistical champion and senior awards were also announced.
