NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Junior linebacker Shawn Loiseau’s (Shrewsbury, MA) Defensive Player of the Year selection headlined seven Warriors earning Northeast-10 All-Conference honors on Wednesday.
Loiseau, who led the country with 13.3 tackles per game, is the first Defensive Player of the Year honoree in the program’s history. Also a first-team all-conference selection for the second straight season, Loiseau broke his own school record, registering 133 tackles this season while tying for the league lead with three fumbles recoveries and ranking tied for third with six sacks.
Loiseau’s classmate, defensive lineman Tony Johnson (Lynn, MA) was named the NE-10 Defensive Lineman of the Year and a first-team honoree. Now a three-time first-team all-conference selection, Johnson led the conference in sacks (8) and tackles for a loss (14.5) while adding 49 tackles. Johnson will enter his senior season with 28.5 career sacks, most in school history.
Greg Abelli (Billerica, MA) and David Bellmont (Melrose, MA) were also first-team all-conference honorees, while James Suozzo (Everett, MA), Jacob Bradley (Dorchester, MA) and Nick Desjardins (Somerville, MA) were second-team selections.
In his one and only season with the Warriors after transferring from Northeastern, Abelli led the league and ranked seventh nationally with 118.4 receiving yards per game and was second with 8.25 receptions per game.
A two-time Preseason All-American and a three-time first-team all-conference selection, Bellmont anchored an offensive line that set school records for first downs and passing yards in a season while ranking second in points and total yards. The offensive line allowed just 21 sacks, second-fewest in the conference.
Now a three-time all-conference honoree, Bradley, one of two captains this year, joined Bellmont on the offensive line, leading the conference and region’s top-ranked offense.
Last year’s Northeast-10 MVP, Suozzo led the league in total offense, passing yards, scoring, and rushing touchdowns. He owns the school record with 33 career touchdowns, while setting single-season marks for passing yards (2,698), completions (194) and attempts (360). He’ll return for his senior year, looking to break virtually every school record for a quarterback.
Desjardins totaled 41 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, and two sacks while forcing and recovering a fumble en route to his second straight second-team all-conference selection.
Bentley quarterback Bryant Johnson was named the conference’s MVP, while Assumption’s David Canney was the Offensive Player of the Year. New Haven’s Pete Rossomando was the Coach of the Year, while AIC’s Justin Tervo was named the Rookie of the Year. Matt Sidebottom from the Greyhounds earned Offensive Lineman of the Year honors.
With the nation’s 11th best offense and region’s top offense for the second straight season, Merrimack finished its season in fifth place with a 4-6 overall record, 4-4 in the conference.
