Lewis University - The Flight Plan

Women's volleyball hosts the GLVC Tournament, both basketball teams open the season and swimming heads to the Grand Prix; highlighting a busy week in Lewis athletics.

Women’s Volleyball: The No. 11 women’s volleyball team hosts the GLVC Tournament this weekend for the third-straight year and are looking for their fourth GLVC tournament title in the past five years. The Flyers clinched the regular-season championship and the right to host the tournament after a 3-2 victory at Rockhurst on Friday evening. Senior Lauren Seliga added 16 kills and 18 digs, giving her 1,000 kills for her career. Lewis recorded a season-high eight blocks led by junior Hannah Koeneman who had eight. The Flyers defeated Drury on Saturday afternoon, 3-0, led by Koeneman who recorded eight blocks for the second consecutive match as Lewis outblocked the Panthers 13-4. Senior Danielle Mount added eight kills and four block assists. The Flyers open up the first round of the GLVC tournament on Friday evening, hosting Drury for a 7:30 PM first serve.

Men’s Cross Country: Led by freshman Andrew McLain, the men’s cross country team raced to a fifth place finish with 127 points at the GLVC Championship on Saturday morning. McLain’s ninth place finish of 25:28 on the 8K course earned him GLVC Freshman Of The Year accolades. Junior Scott Tanis crossed the finish line in 18th place in 25:54 and freshman Ross Ochs finished in 24th place in 26:01.

Women’s Cross Country: Senior Kathryn Hague became the first Flyer in 11 years to capture the GLVC Women’s Cross Country Championship on Saturday morning, crossing the finish line in 21:29. The Flyers finished the 6K race in fifth place as a team with 114 points. Sophomore Amy Clawson was also named to the GLVC All-Conference team with Hague after her 13th place finish of 22:43.          

Men’s Basketball: Led by junior point guard Chris McClellan and his 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting, the men’s basketball team was able to hold off a late surge from Division I DePaul on Sunday evening for a 70-68 victory. Senior guard Dennis Thomas added 14 points for the Flyers while junior Matt Toth chipped in nine points and had a game-high seven rebounds. Lewis opens up the 2010-11 regular season on Friday as they head to California to square off with UC-San Diego for a 2:30 PM (PST) start in the opening day of the Disney Tip-Off.

Women’s Basketball: The women’s basketball team started the preseason and ended it this week with a pair of losses to Division I opponents Valparaiso and Western Michigan. In the 64-44 loss to Valparaiso, senior Jenny Turpel led Lewis with 13 points, seven rebounds, five steals and two blocks while junior Devon Carbaugh added seven points. The Flyers were able to force 20 Valpo turnovers. In the 74-54 setback to Western Michigan, senior Kelly Monaco made four 3-pointers to score 12 points to lead all Flyers. Turpel added eight points, eight rebounds and four assists. Lewis opens up the regular season on Friday at Saginaw Valley State at 7 PM (EST).
