Flyers place 2nd overall at Disney Tip-Off Classic; Lee leads Flyers with game-high 16 points.
Anaheim, Calif. – For the second-straight game, the Lewis University men’s basketball team rallied from a halftime deficit to earn the 61-51 non-conference victory over Dixie State to claim second-place honors at the Disney Division II West Coast Tip-Off Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center on Sunday (Nov. 14) afternoon.
Lewis headed into halftime trailing the Red Storm, 26-23, but junior forward Jeron Lee (Chicago, Ill./Marshall/Southeastern C.C.) proved to be the offensive catalyst for the Flyers in final 20 minutes.
Lee knocked down four three-pointers – all in the second half - and finished with a game-high 16 points. Flyer senior guard Dennis Thomas, Jr. (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) added 12 points, while point guard Chris McClellan (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Wheeling) chipped in 10 points, including a pair of treys.
“It’s all about effort and defense,” Lewis head men’s basketball coach Scott Trost said. “The kids came out and competed and I’m proud of our effort.
“I’m thrilled to go home 2-1 after the way we played on Friday night,” Trost continued. “This tournament was a valuable learning lesson for everyone.”
With the win, Lewis improves to 2-1 on the season and Dixie State falls to 1-2 on the campaign.
Sunday’s contest featured a combined 95 shots, 54 of which were three-pointers. Only 16 of those three-point attempts were converted, which led to rebounds.
The rebounds proved decisive for the Flyers, as Lewis enjoyed a 40-25 advantage on the glass, including 14 offensive rebounds – which led to 14 second-chance points.
Dixie State forward Griffon Jones topped the Red Storm with 12 points, while teammates Donovan Plunkett and Jeremiah Barnes each chipped in 11 in the loss.
Lewis begins regional play on Thursday (Nov. 18) evening, as the Flyers head to Detroit to square off with Wayne State for a 7 p.m. (EST) first tip.
