Lady Panthers Knock Off Host CSU-Pueblo at Chuck Stephens Classic 68-56

PUEBLO, Colo. - Kassie Walker scores career high 22 points to lead the Drury Lady Panthers to a 68-56 victory over host CSU-Pueblo at the  Colorado State-Pueblo/Chuck Stephens Classic Saturday played at the Massari Arena.

The Lady Panthers now sit at (2-4) while the ThunderWolves of CSU-Pueblo dropped to (2-1).

 Both teams were neck and neck early on with the Lady Panthers never able to get more than three points ahead of the ThunderWolves in the opening half.   CSU-Pueblo jumped out to an early 20-11 lead at the 12:04 mark to distance themselves from DU.

The ThunderWolves extended the lead to a 12 point advantage at the 7:05 mark on a Jannelle Branting three-pointer. Drury got back to within eight points four times and drew within seven when DU junior guard Walker hit a three with four seconds left in the half to make what would be the halftime score of 35-28.

CSU shot 44.8% percent and forced twelve DU turnovers while having just five. The Lady Panthers shot 35.7 percent on 10-of-28 shooting.

Walker hit a three pointer just 30 seconds into the second half to cut the Pueblo lead to four points 35-31. The ThunderWolves would extend back out to a 10 point lead 43-33 at the 15:44 mark and start to pull away. Drury would rally back to within six on a Ja’Nell Jones jumper at the 11:51 mark to make it 48-42.

The Lady Panthers would tie it up at 50 on a Walker three-pointer at the 8:23 mark and Walker would put the Lady Panthers up 52-50 on a fast break steal and layup with 8:05 left on the clock. A pair of Pueblo free throws would tie it up at 52 before the Lady Panthers made a run and 9-0 run to stretch the lead to 61-52 with 3:32 left in the contest.

.With 3:03 left the ThunderWolves scored again to cut the Lady Panther lead to 61-54, but the Lady Panthers outscored CSU-Pueblo five to four to claim the 66-58 victory.
  
Walker led all Drury scorers with career high 22 points followed by Jones who had 17 points and 10 boards. DU junior Erica Groose scored a season best 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

DU finished with a 47-29 advantage on the boards. The ThunderWolves were led by Rachel Espinoza who had 15 points and Amanda Bartlett added 12 points.

Drury outshot the ThunderWolves on 26-of-60 for 43.3 percent while CSU shot at a 38.2 percent clip on 21-of-55.

The Lady Panthers will host Illinois-Springfield on Thursday, December 2 at 5:45 and host Saint Joseph’s on Saturday, December 4 at 1 p.m. in a pair of GLVC contests at the O’Reilly Family Event Center.

The All-Tournament team was made up of Walker and Jones for the Lady Panthers, Mollie Whiting of Dubuque, Kelsie Kruger of Adams State and Kendall Babler of CSU-Pueblo.   Vero Jo Bustos of Adams State earned MVP honors.
