Lady Braves top FSU 71-51 in women’s basketball

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Briana Stanton had a game-high 19 points to go with 10 rebounds as UNC Pembroke downed Fayetteville State 71-51 in women’s basketball at Felton J. Capel Arena on Saturday.

Domonique Washington added 14 points and six rebounds while JaToya Kemp had 10 points and 10 boards as the Lady Braves (3-1) overcame 22 turnovers to keep the Lady Broncos from picking up their first victory of the season.

Tiffany Haywood (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) led the Lady Broncos (0-4) with her third double-double of the season, leading the way with 14 points and 16 rebounds. LaQuasha Jordan (Jr., Greenville, NC) added 13 points and Dasnii Curtis (Fr., Fayetteville, NC) added 11 points while Capricia Smalls (Fr., McLeansville, NC) chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.

Fayetteville State struggled all day trying to find its shot, and misfired on 12 of its first 15 attempts from the field as UNC Pembroke used a 13-2 run to take an early 20-9 lead.

But the Lady Broncos responded to the spurt, ripping off a 13-2 run of their own later in the first half, getting six points from Jordan, four from Haywood and three from Curtis – most of it out of the halfcourt set – to tie the game at 22 with 3:28 to go in the opening half. UNCP led 28-24 at the break.

After that, however, it was all UNCP. While the Lady Broncos again had trouble finding their range to start the period – Fayetteville State was held scoreless in the first 3 minutes of the second half – the Braves got hot, hitting their first three shots from the field to spark what would build into a 17-2 run and a 45-26 lead barely five minutes into the half.

Fayetteville State got itself back into the game midway through the period, though. Smalls hit back-to-back 3-pointers, and Jordan made one from the wing, and quickly the Lady Broncos were back within 10, 47-37, with 10:17 to go.

FSU had two chances to trim the deficit further, but couldn’t get any closer. UNCP, meanwhile, stretched its lead to 67-47 with 3:28 to go.

Fayetteville State travels to play Barton on Dec. 11. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
